^ . The VQ35DE has VVL, i.e. VTEC in Honda talk. The VQ37VHR has VVEL, onpar with A-VTEC from Honda.
The G35 is not meant to be an econo box until you reach ridiculously high into your powerband. My buddy always like doing that with XRS, he gets a bit of a leap (I also need to shift while he is still at 7XXX RPM), but by the end of third gear I easily pull 2-3 cars.

I hate those Honda guys with there multi colored cars and huge exhaust and think there shot is hott..I was at a light and one rolled past me slow and he put it in neutral and reved it next to me..I think it's so funny..I just looked at him and laughed..my rims are worth more than his car..what was even funnier was his girl was in a ****tier civic behind him with a bigger fart can..

wtf? lol. To be honest here, i drive both...as you can see its a nonvtec but its still fast because the car is lighter than the cars now. For example the early years like 1990-93 integra/honda weights about 2500-2600 depending if they striped it out with built motor like b20vtec chipped etc added can beat stock G35's. G35's weights about 3500-3600 pounds and its heavy but you know i drive both cars so i dont say much cuz its fun either way. Im a fan on both, just dont like euro cars...=X

VTEC is pretty awesome. I've got the Toyota version of it in my other car (VVTL-i). Normally, when the engine would be dead over 6k RPM, the second cam kicks in and it's like you've got a new engine until redline. It's a different driving experience. The G is all torque all the time, while you have to keep RPM's up for VTEC, but it's also fun.
