Who needs 4cyl efficiency
12 miles a gallon is pretty bad.
I had one tank last month, driving around Colorado, where I had over 27mpg (actual). The car reported over 28. Of course, I also had one at 20mpg when I went up Pikes Peak.

Neeeenerrrrrr Neeeeeeenerrrrrrrr. THIS IS THE FUN POLICE! PULL OVER!
Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is a very inaccurate way to measure your gas mileage. The only way to do it is measure what actually goes into the tank and compare it to the actual miles driven, and to do it for a long distance...When you're operating at the far right side of a bell curve, it doesn't take much to bring you back to the norm.
I was driving out of Colorado into Kansas once with a steady 30 mph tail wind and got about 37 mpg in my old Maxima. Accurate? Sure. Greatly affected by external forces? Absolutely.

Driving at a very high rate of speed in a very hot climate for a long period of time (1 hour+) I averaged 9 MPG.... worst mpg average in the G. Usually get about 17.
