When draining Auto trans fluid....

I only got 5 quarts....I guess I read wrong somewhere.

Most posts say 6 quarts....

I know the pan holds about 4ish and the remaining 2 quarts are in the trans cooler.

The entire transmission with torque converter is 11 quarts.

So would I be ok draining the 4 from the pan and only one from the trans cooler?

Is it necessary to drain the cooler? I never have in any of my other cars......

Would it make a huge difference being that there are 11 quarts and you are only going to be able to drain half of that???

Arent you essentially mixing new and old fluid?

Incidentally i was reading the FSM for the 2nd gen auto, unless i read it wrong the recommendation was to keep replacing until the fluid comes out clean.

There is two ways of doing things, a drain and fill and a trans flush. A drain and fill is clearly the easier way of doing things a flush is where you remove a return hose and or hook it to a machine and keep adding fluid until you remove all the old fluid. I have heard mixed things about doing a full flush. Assuming you arent driving around like michael schumacher, you should be fine doing a drain and fill on regular intervals. You didnt say how many miles you have though i suppose if you havent changed the fluid by like 70 thousand or something really high than maybe i would do a flush but if its 30 thousand miles you should be fine.

the car is at about 58k and im not sure about the person who owned it before me

It was a a lease, so im assming everything was done.

I dont see why people say if you have higher milage on the original oil to get a flush?

I understand the diffrence between a drain and a flush

Im just wondering why people want to remove the fluid from th trans cooler if your not gonna also drain the torque converter
