winter tires

Hey guys..new to the forum and i have a question

Just purchased a 2006 g35 coupe black with sport pkg

Winter is coming up and I wanted to get some winter tires. I am planning on getting nicer rims for the summer next year possibly. Currently the car is on the 19inch sport pkg rims. I was considering getting 19 inch winter tires for these rims and then purchasing some nicer 19inch rims/summer tires next year.

Numerous people have told me to go down in size to 17 or 18 inch rims/tires. I feel that 17 inch are too small for the car and wont look good

So that leaves me getting 18inch rims/tires vs just purchasing 19's for the winter tires and slapping them on the stock rims.

If I compare prices on tirerack there is about a $200-250 price difference btw blizzaks 18 and 19s. Considering I would have to buy new 18 inch rims right now Im leaning towards getting the 19 inch tires.

Do you think there will be a big difference in terms of performance in the snow btw 18 and 19 inch winter tires?
This is my first RWD car - Im used to driving FWD in snow

What would you guys do? Let me know
thanks

not sure where you're from but it may be good to ask this question in one of the regional sub-forums... especially in your region. also if you have the rays OEM 19's.. you could prob sell them for the cost of 18 rims and winter tires.

Im from Vancouver BC.
How much do used OEM 19inch rays go for usually? with no tires?
Mine are in perfect condition except on rim has been slightly curbed

Never thought of selling them? but somethin to think about

Well blizzaks r the way to go and from what I've heard that it doesn't matter much about the size of the tire for the winter months u have a rear wheel drive car u r gonna slid around no matter....I have 18s on my car I'm getting ready for winter and ill prolly be getting blizzaks as well so far everyone has told me that blizzaks r the best winter tire u can by even better than studded tires.

O and I will be getting new rims next summer to and ill just switch out rims each season and just leave the tires on them....an after market rim is most likely gonna get packed with snow and its gonna mess up the balance pretty bad so i would stay with stock rims and winter tires.....and new aftermarket rims with summer tires and change them out thats just my personal opinion

Nokian WR's are much better than Blizzaks. Blizzaks will be a little better the 1st winter, but worse the 2nd and 3rd, if you get a 3rd winter out of them. My Nokians will last at least 4 winters, and probably 5. Blizzaks only have the softer, pliable winter rubber compound on the outer half of the tread depth. Once that's gone, they're just crappy all-seasons. Nokians have winter compound for the entire tread depth, so they're good in the cold as long as they have tread. I've had them for years in Northern Michigan, and so do my 4 siblings (2 up here, 2 in Chicago). Only winter tire I'll ever buy. http://www.nokiantyres.com/

DONT GET BLIZZAKS... only lazy ppl who dont want to take the time and research winter tires buy them. i have 19's in the summer and 17's in the winter, its better to have more tire in the winter just in case u hit a pothole...nokians by far are the best, next i would say is yoko winter drives...

well too late now...i ended up ordering the blizzaks LM-60 on tirerack.

I did research and Ive had blizzaks before (WS-60 15inchers) and they were awesome. Also running blizzak LM25 on 18s for another car and they were pretty good last winter - got stuck a couple times but that was due to the snow being very high and pretty much lifting wheels/tires off the ground...lol

I guess nokians is somethin i should of looked at... too late now. I will look into those next time.

Blizzaks it is, on the 19 inch rays. I will get one more summer out of my summer tires and then upgrade my rims the next summer. Rays and blizzaks for winter
We will see what happens

By the way, I want to plug the Michelin Pilot Alpin tires - you can get them in hi-speed ratings, they feel like z-rated tires in the twisties, but STILL give tons of grip in the snow. The best snow tires I've ever driven on.

You want a narrow tire for snow tires to help cut through the snow better.

Ideally most people go with a smaller dia and width rim so they can fit a narrow tires with as big of a sidewall on it as possibly (for when you hit a HUGE pothole caused by melting and refreezing water throughout the winter.

I would recommend 17's, cheaper tires, and more functional ability.
