Help my wife get up the driveway(without ruining her clutch)

You may remember my thread about how to get up our driveway without scraping after I got lowered. https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-37-...scrapping.html
Now my wife just bought a 2009 G37s coupe and is learning how to drive a MT. I have no experience with manuals so I am of no help.

She can get up the driveway alright, not very smoothly though, but there is a really bad smell coming from the clutch after she turns off the car which is concerning.
Her current method for the driveway is:

Car in 1st gear, have tried in 2nd.
Clutch pedal is somewhat in.

Here is a picture of our driveway, if any additional pictures would help let me know.

Any suggestions for proper technique for this driveway?

why does she stop on it midway? you should be able to go in slowly in 1 motion without stalling. or if i was doing it slowly would be while still moving kick the clutch in and wait for it to slow down a tiny bit then get back on the gas and let the clutch out to move forward and you can do that in quick bursts. or if she stops on it for w/e reason she can use the hand brake to make it so she doesn't ride the clutch so much

Do not stop on the driveway... if you need to open the garage door, stop before rolling onto the driveway, open the garage door, then go - side the car a bit to get over the curb. This should also give you a bit more angle on the slope so the angle would be a bit less (although I'm not sure how much it'd matter). And practice starting from a dead stop on slopes more so this wouldn't be an issue anymore.

She should only have to slip the clutch a bit going over the curb part of the driveway, and possibly entering the garage. Hard to say without being there, but I would probably:
  • Slow down to a crawl at the curb, clutch slipping a bit (assuming you enter the driveway like I do, at <5 mph)
  • Clutch all the way out (engaged) up the driveway
  • With practice, would probably just push the clutch in and freewheel into the garage. Before she's used to that, she may need to slip the clutch a bit entering

That's it. Good luck!

Like the others said, she does not have to come to a complete stop, just drive onto the driveway without stopping or engaging the clutch.

If she has to come to a complete stop, then the best way for her to avoid burning the clutch is to watch her rpm's. While she is letting out the clutch to get going, the rpm's should not go over 2000 rpms. The burning clutch smell is there because she is giving it too much gas. So watching the rpms is the best way to control that.

She can also use the E-brake to avoid rolling backwards.

She should never try it in 2nd gear, that will just damage the clutch even more.

Take the car back and buy her an automatic suv. Next she will be curbing the rims running into things. That bad smell is usually a bad thing. Not good to be burning your clutch and it probably hasnt even been broke in yet. Your going to be like an evo owner and replace it with your first oil change. Do yourself the favor please and get her an automatic.

agreed that everyone has to start somewhere... but on a 40k$ car??? Not legit. Get a $700beater manual, learn to drive it and then go with your 6 spd. You will save the money in repairs.

That driveway looks like a breeze. Perhaps get some more practice stopping and starting on hills.

It was already stated though, just watch your RPM's, they should NEVER exceed 2k.
