G35, Stock Alarm Limitations???

So I havent had my new stereo in my car for more than a week now. Today, someone broke into one of my co-workers car and stole his stereo and GPS. According to the police, they break the window and lean in and take the stereo....they never unlock the door and open it as it will set off most alarms...makes sense.

Another co-worker was telling me that some car alarms can tell if the window has been broken. I find it unlikely that the 2006 G has this feature...anyone know?

Nope! There are various alarms that can sense glass breakage, intrusion (motion sensors), etc. I have an 08. I thought about adding an impact sensor for example by connecting into what we do have such as hood or trunk open sensors.

Keep in mind that one of the most important parts of the alarm system is the device that puts out the sound, where is it located (not good)?

I've never put an alarm in a car of mine...I'm really considering it now that the cars are getting hit at work. I'll probably get a serious set of air horns too... If lucky, I can get a theif to soil his pants.

This is true about factory alarms.. I added a vibration sensor in order to keep the factory remote which works very well even when trucks pass by the alarm goes off, also i added an extra LED scanner light on the dash to throw off any would be break ins.. The bottom line at least where i live if they want something there gonna get it regardless but it does help somewhat

Most any shop can install motion sensors to your OEM alarm, cost is cheap $35 + install. That way a broken window or if they hook up your G for a tow it will sound an alert. We've lost a few Gs on Driver where they were just towed. If you want louder horns HELLA makes replacements that cost around $70 easy to install too.

Thanks same olg. Tell me more about the vibration sensor. Where did you get it and how does it work with the existing system? I like this idea...why gut a good alarm system when you can simply add in the additional functionallity...

Do you recall the add on being effective? Better yet, do you think it would be effective in a window break?

stock alarm is garbage. Get a Viper or something similar.

I installed a viper 5902 last week and its amazing. Has remote start, 2 way communication, 1 mile range. So if anyone tries to break into your car or tries to jack up your car to steal your rims (you need an additional tilt sensor for this), your remote will tell you someone is breaking in.

100% the sensor has adjustment on there for sensitivity, like i said my car maybe 10 ft. from the street and if a big truck comes by the alarm goes..... It will def go off if a window was even hit. I kick my tire sometimes and goes off. I dont think you will be dissapointed at all, im not

Or if you put the air horns in the wrong location he may have you soil your pants when you come out to an empty car. Many a vette owner has found out the hard way.

Actually you may need to isolate the difference between a shock/impact sensor from a true motion sensor. In the case of a shock/impact sensor the car has to be physically touched or moved in some way (someone jacking car up for wheels for example) or a large truck setting alarm off by vibration and so on. Some of these can also be sensitive to even temperature depending on design. Get a good one and they are effective.

The motion sensor can sense movement without being touched, sort of like motion sensing towel dispensers, light switches, etc. These can work in various ways such as IR activated, radar, etc. A good one will be sensitive within a zone of protection.

There are also glass sensors which 'listen' for glass breaking. In any case there are a lot of options that can tie into an existing alarm such as what we have. To me the advantage of some of the aftermarket ones is the ability to tell you if there is a problem remotely. Even before the alarm sounds some will 'page' you and tell you if someone is even too close to the car, if the doors are all closed, and so on. I thought about one so I can check it status from inside of a movie (did I lock the car?).

One thing to watch for with aftermarket ones with remote starters is how they interface to the car. Some for example directly tap into the BCM and on more than one occasion has caused issues with this rather expensive module. Do a search on the net and you can see how serious a bad installation can be.

I worked at a casino over the 4th this year. Every day there were fireworks going off across the street at the fireworks stands. Car alarms were constantly going off in the parking garage and other lots. On the 4th with fireworks going off on the roof of the parking garage it was impressive just how many actually had aftermarket alarms in their cars and trucks. Probably some of these were the kinds where you would normally leave the keys in the vehicle with a note 'take me please'.
