Those of You with Painted Grills...

Do you guys get a lot of rock chips? I went to talk to a guy about painting my grill and he was kind of reluctant, saying it would get really messed up, really quickly. He was kind of an @sshole...

Anyways, I've seen quite a few of you guys with painted grilles, and i was just wondering if this really was the case.

I have a bunch of rock chips in mine from daily driving. I don't follow close and I still collect chips. I have two grills because of this, one for DD that collects rock chips and one for shows/meets.

I wouldn't let that deter you from painting it though, just know that you'll have to paint it every once in a while to keep it looking clean. Just DIY it, there are a few good DIY threads on how to properly prep and paint your grill.

Do you think its any worse than the OEM grille?

And is yours chrome or what? Looks chrome, just no Mt. Fuji.

Just put a clear bra over it. It should prevent fading overtime, but im not too sure about rock chips.

Mine is painted silver. I don't think it chips anymore than my OEM grill, it just looks worse to me since its lighter in color.

You can see the color better here:

Yeah u def will get rock chips but personally I think it's worth dealing with considering how much nicer a blacked out grill looks.
Where are u located, some states are def a lot harder on cars than others.
Personally I wouldn't pay someone to paint my grill just because it really isn't that difficult to do and any profesional paint job that's applied to the grill will eventually chip.
You're better off saving the money and doing it yourself.
If you want a step by step process pm me or do a search for "painted grills" "blacked out grills"

I did mine 7 1/2 months ago, and I think I only have one rock chip.
Even if I had to repaint it every year it would still be worth it, but at the rate it's holding up it should be much longer than that before I need to repaint.

I used Duplicolor Self-Etching primer, Valspar Flat Black and Valspar Flat Clear (along with lots of prep, lots of sanding before, and between coats)

A painter friend of mine professionally painted my grille gloss black over a year ago. I only have like 1 noticeable rock chip and I daily drive my car. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones?

I painted mine a few months ago and have a couple chips in it already, but I got this black chemical resistant marker that I use to touch up the chips. It works great and doesn't have that purple hue that sharpies have. Here is a link if anyone is interested.

I think a bra is also a good investment. Mine doesn't usually get that damage unless I'm doing some long highway driving like 70+ miles. I drove from Al to FL a few times and between AL and Atlanta many times and hate having to wash all the bugs and sh*t off the car from the highway driving. Driving around town, not so much, but a bra I think takes care of the chips to the grill and all the dead bugs that get caught on your bumper and grill. just my $.02

I have a black grill on my car, no rock chips! I don't get rock chips *knock on wood* but I do get obstructed by bigger objects on the road.
