The higher the RPM's the more gas you are consuming/burning... basically the engine is working harder.
Let me state it more clearly, sorry. Just had two jagerbombs. Anyways, so, is the amount of gas you are currently using based more on the RPMs, or based on how far the pedal is depressed?

LOL! Nice

I am sure someone much smarter than me could chime in, but my theory is that they higher the RPM's the more gas.

So if you are doing 40 in 3rd and 40 in 5th and you want to get to 55. You floor it in both scenarios, your RPM's will go higher more quickly in 3rd than in 5th. Therefor you'd be using more gas in 3rd gear vs 5th to get to the same speed. 3rd would obviously get you there faster though...

I was almost positive the amount you depress the pedal was related directly to the amount of gas used, just makes logical sense, but maybe you're right. I'll wait for others to chime in and see what happens.

I would agree with that theory in an automatic - not sure about a standard transmission though... I'm curious now as well.

At 40 i am also in sixth. Its true the engine is boggy and you dont get any acceleration but thats what the cluth and second gear is for I think 8mpg is about right for driving around in third gear going 40mph

Theres definately a non driving issue. When is the last time you cleaned your injectors, switched plugs, air filter etc. ? I tend to run high rpms and only get around 20 in town.

The thing with bog is you dont want to be under revved where its got no power therefore burning gas because the engine is actually working harder to keep up the speed. For cruising 2500 is the optimal range to be around. Also on the other side you dont want to be revving the hell out of the car until 4500 or more since it will be eating gas trying to spin the engine up that much.

I find it hard to believe thats normal, unless the car is extremely old, and i feel like 7 years isnt old enough to reduce the efficiency by half of the official values

Dont judge it based on the needle location as there will always be a ton of error associated with that broad of a guess. Calculate it by taking the miles driven divided by the number of gallons the pump tells you, you put in.. And with your driving habits it sounds like you are just misreading the horribly accurate gas gauge. Should be closer to atleast 16 mpg.

This.

Halfway on the fuel gauge is not equal to half your fuel tank. The light comes on near empty when you have 4-5 gallons left in a 20 gallon tank. I'm not sure about you, but my light comes on well under the 1/4 mark.

instead of looking at the needle... see how reliable your gas gauge is cause some G's are known to have weird problems... next time you fill up check how many gallons you put in

but if you think about it your engine is constantly checking for the right air to fuel mixture so unless your rpms are up and taking in more air, you wont use more gas when at full throttle. if your amount of throttle was directly related to the amount of gas it would be similar to a carburated engine ya know?

The manual says that you can cruise in 6th at 35mph. I do it all the time.

40MPH in 5th talk about granny shifting (to quote a corny line)
Sounds to me like a lambda problem, take it to a mechanic with Nissan diagnostics and have it checked.
