Question 17 Inch - Chrome pealing off :(

Who else here has the 6 spoke 17in chrome wheels on their G35. If you have them, is your chrome peeling off or deteriorated near the lug nut holes ?

And what is a reputable shop i can take my wheels to get re-chromed( 714 area.)
When i do get them re-chromed how long would it take ?
What may cause the chrome to come off ?

I replaced 2 of the wheels on my car with "refinished" OEM wheels from some place online. They were like $125 each and looked perfect when I got them.

They are now peeling exactly where you describe. The 2 stock wheels that I never replaced are not doing this.

My guess is you have different wheels than actually came on your car. Either knock offs or "refinished" OEM wheels.

Mine's inching towards 100k, and besides some pesky brake dust I have no problems on any of my wheels.

That's because your's are painted.

OP: ever thought of refinishing them, like a powdercoat? It might be cheaper to do that or in fact buy some oem wheels from somewhere and just have two extra wheels.

^Paint can still flake off.

You could use this as an excuse to look at getting some new wheels. I would give it a look if you're looking at buying OEM wheels anyway.

My wheels are original OEM chrome wheels from the dealers and never have been refinished.

It kind of sounds like you don't want to refinish them to anything else than chrome then. In that case I would call around and see what you can get them chrome finished for. I would imagine it isn't cheap though

The chroming was likely done by a vendor that the dealership uses if that makes OP feel any better about refinishing. It's a common tactic by dealerships to add to their profit margin. They take the factory wheels off a brand new car, unmount the tires, and send them to a vendor who chrome dips them at a cost of $500. Dealer now charges $1500 extra via that little add on sticker next to the factory window sticker for "chrome wheels". There is no "factory chrome wheels" on G35s as far as I know. The quality of work and how long the chrome will last depends on how good the vendor was.
