I have a 3.9 GPA, and, if it makes a difference, probably won't be getting the car until I'm 16 and a half. Thanks in advance for any input.
Your GPA will have a minor impact compared to your age and the type of car. Expect to pay a pretty high amount if you're the primary driver. Insurance companies frown on 16 y.o. drivers, especially when the car has close to 300 HP.

It may be inexpensive, but it's also foolish. You probably have state minimum coverage with that price, so try to avoid hitting a newer car because you don't have enough coverage to pay for it. Your car must also be paid for since you can't owe money on a car and not have full coverage on it (the bank won't allow it). You total it, that's $25K you just lost.

I've got $500K/$500K/$1M coverage and $1M umbrella policy on top of that, and a $100 deductible (liability/collision,comprehensive is $0). Costs $125 a month. Why the high coverage? Because it's cheap to add that kind of coverage (maybe +$15/mth), and I don't have to worry about injuring someone in their Ferrari. It also pays to be with the same company for 6 years, own a house, and have a clean driving record.

Yep, my rates dropped 60% when I turned 25.

If you buy insurance and just shop for the cheapest possible, you are not grasping the importance of it.

There are people who die everyday from auto accidents. There are people who are permanently injured or put into comas from auto accidents.

Lets say for whatever reason, you were exhausted, spilled something on your lap or something caught your attention for a split second and you happened to tbone a car with a mother and two small children inside... If you were responsible for death or serious injuries; its going to be much higher than 25/50/25. They will sue you for the rest. If you dont have the money, they will legally garnish your wages up to 25% per (some states, CA is example for this one).

You purchase insurance thinking of the worst possible scenario. Its what will save your *** if you really need it. Sure, 1g/2g's a year is alot... but $400,000 (average settlement for wrongful death by auto accident judgment) is much more!

I know, most people hate being forced to purchase insurance and think its very overpriced... and sure, every business does what they do to make profit... but I guess since Im in the insurance industry, Im biased since I see it getting used... =/
I understand what you are trying to say, but I refuse to substitute responsible driving with expensive insurance policy. So I pay only for enough coverage to cover my car and my health, with that I obviously have to pay for similar coverage in case I hit someone.
Now days higher insurance levels simply make you a more desirable catch for lawsuits rather than responsible person. And even tho it's insurance company money they are going after, you still get rapped by ins company with premiums.
So you pay more to have higher levels, ins co pays off more in case of the accident simply cuz you got high levels and second party has "room to grow", then you pay even more for same levels of coverage cuz your ins company just settled a claim, and cycle repeats it self.

So why not pay enough and drive responsibly?

This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever read. Having good coverage and driving responsibly are not mutually exclusive. I don't know anyone who drives carelessly because they have good coverage. I sure as hell don't, and I have awesome coverage. Many people drive carelessly, but it's not insurance related.

Sorry, I've got a sore spot for people who'd rather save $20 a month than do the responsible thing and get sufficient coverage. If you can afford a G35, then you can afford adequate insurance. If you don't care about your financial future, that's your business, but you could have a major physical and financial impact on someone else's future, and that's the definition of irresponsible driving.

The cheapest way to do it...

Put the car in your mother's name. (Why not? she's paying for it anyways).

Insure the car under "her" name.

Then add yourself as a "Known" driver.

Done deal.
