He has a first gen sedan with 138K mile on it's clock, if it wasn't serviced on a regular basis it's not going to last. I can guarantee it didn't have it's oil/filter changed every 3500 miles or he wouldn't be in this situation! Don't be nervous just get your service done on time...

Yes definitely on the service on time. Preventative maintenance will always be cheaper than replacing with a brand new part. My car was dealer maintained up till 90,000 miles when I found a local shop that was cheaper and a whole lot closer.

As for the oil and filter change every 3500 miles... I did not change the oil every 3500 miles. However, the oil was always changed before the 7500 mile interval for light service when the car did a lot of commuting every week on the freeway.
Except for the 1st and 2nd oil change at 600 miles and 2000 miles I have always put in full synthetic oil usually Pennzoil sometimes Mobil. Filters were changed out every oil change as well.

I'm running Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 with Bosch Distance Plus oil filter right now.

For Sedans, Premium isn't necessary.

For coupes, regular fuel can be used temporarily, and you must not smash on the gas or drive "abruptly" according to the manual.

And they recommend you replace it with Premium ASAP.

Oil consumption history are present in all VQ35de motors. Such as the Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, etc etc. Google it.

My sedan requires premium fuel... My brother who works for Nissan in service says that almost every OC motor that gets replaced is attributed to lower octane gas and not changing oil at the proper intervals.

On a side note to the OP, I used Pennzoil Ultra for one oil change and noticed that within 2000 miles I had lost a quart of oil in the motor. Never before had I experienced OC. I changed my oil a couple of days later and havent used Pennzoil Ultra again. Not saying my oil loss/consumption was a result of the Pennzoil, but it hasnt consumed/lost any oil since that one time. Also, 7k miles is a little much between oil changes.

Interesting post. I quit using Pennzoil Platinum after 2 oil changes with it. I burned a quart of oil in 5000 miles twice and have not had that issue with Castrol Syntec or Valvoline Syn Power. With both of those I use less than 1/4 qt. between oil changes.

05 5AT with 92K miles.

Not following Nissans recommended oil/filter changing schedule and using Pennzoil you may as well run your Infiniti off a cliff....at least you might be able to collect $$ from you insurance company.

I have an 04 6MT with 97k. I freaked out when I noticed the loss in oil after only 2k. Interesting that someone else had the same experience with a Pennzoil product. I bought because it was on special. Some things are just too good to be true. I went back to Castrol Edge after that one oil change and havent looked back.

I have the same issue here - over 107K miles on the clock and wondering if it would be worth to rebuild the engine. Burning about 1qt of oil every 1,000 miles. I wonder how long will the engine last if no work will be done to it - just being regularly maintained?

2003 G35 sedan - 6 speed MT

Have you had a diagnosis? For instance, is there reduces oil pressure?

The last five or so oil changes, I have used AmsOil Extended life 5W30 and changed it at 15,000 miles. I have 103000 miles and it uses about a 1/2 quart between changes. That's 1/2 quart in 15K miles.

I hate to report back in this thread and report that my 04 6mt sedan is consuming oil at a rate of 1qt per 500 miles.

Its been meticulously maintained and never gone beyond 3k between an oil change. It started at 98k miles, 1k miles after my post.

I plan on just dropping a built long block in.

The car has about 138,000 miles on it now.
However, recently the car has been eating oil at about 1 quart every 1,100 miles. A big increase from when it was new when it consumed at most half a quart every oil change.
The oil has been religiously changed every 2000 miles to 5000 miles interval.
If it was using as much as a half quart between changes when new, at those change intervals, this engine has never been right.
