Ill always buy from a private party, as long as you know what to look for, and look over everything on the car, there isn't a problem buying from a person. There are much better deals to be had. I know this isn't always the case, but buying a car can be a risk.

Bought mine from a reputable Dealer. I did the autocheck and carfax and had my local mechanic put it up on a lift. I always buy extended warranty anyway so no biggie.

Bought my car private party... The guy had maintenance records, receipts for every little thing bought for the car, and it was super low miles (15k on a 2006 when I bought it in 2009). Got it for pretty much a steal for $23k, and a car in this condition would have been several thousand more at the dealer. So far, everything works perfectly on my car (aside from the small stuff that happens like axle click) and it's just over 30k.

I bought mine from a small dealer that had no problem letting me take it for 2 days so I could have it checked at Infiniti. Got it for a great price as well, $15,500 in 03/09 with 46K miles in mint condition with all options except for nav. Best part was they gave me $5000 for trading in an 01 Maxima with 126,000 miles so my OTD price was $10,500. It was a one owner lease car owned by a lady in Plano that had all of her service done at the Infiniti dealer up there.

Bottom line is I wouldn't buy a used car if I couldn't have it checked by a reputable mechanic. You don't need to buy one from Infiniti if you follow this rule. Might not be 'certified', but I saved a few thousand dollars going the route I did, and I bought a flawless 4 year old car for less than half of what it cost new. Good enough in my book.
