Slotted Rotor Wind Noise?

I'm going to the track in a few weeks and I just changed all four pads to EBC Yellowstuff and installed EBC slotted/dimpled rotors on the front. I left the rear rotors stock. EBC says the rotors will make "wind noise" because of the slots. There are three per rotor..

I installed all this myself and the brakes are functioning perfectly. No grinding. No squealing.

However, there is a whirring noise coming from both fronts. Almost like a high frequency rustling noise. You cannot hear it with the windows up. In fact, you can only hear it when you are driving near a wall or fence with the windows down. It is not loud and the best way I can describe it is like the noise of a pinwheel going around real fast. It is not annoying and if this is just the 'wind noise' EBC is talking about then it is no big deal.

Anyone else had this with EBC or any other slotted rotors?

Yes. I have experienced the same noise you describe on an older car that had drilled and slotted rotors. Those rotors could be heard with windows up. Currently I have rotors that are slotted on my g with no noise. Completely silent. I believe its the drilling making the noise.

Thanks. It may be the drilling, but these rotors are not drilled all the way through. They are 'dimpled'. But, it may be the dimples making the noise. The other unusual thing about these rotors is that they only have three slots which is less than most. This could possibly make noise from the slots more pronounced since the frequency of the slots passing through the pads would be decreased which would make it less of a continues noise and more of a swish-swish-swish.

Anyway, as long as I haven't screwed anything up with the install I'm okay with the noise.

The noise actually isn't loud at all. With the windows up I cannot hear it at all. With the windows down I can only hear it when the sound is bouncing back off of a wall, a fence, trees, etc. If there is nothing like that close to the car, you can't even hear it by leaning out the window.

I had my wife drive past me a few times and I could hear the noise but only just barely. It was definitely coming from the front and it is the same on either side. I've inspected my installation and I can't imagine what else this could be.

And as far as I can tell there is no excess heat. The hub of the wheel feels warm after braking but not hot at all.

AnywayI'm getting close to 200 miles on the new pads and this weekend I'm going to bed them in with a few 60-to-5 mph stops. Then I'm going to press them pretty hard. If there is no fade or other noise I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

My Wilwoods have slotted rotors and I don't hear them at all. I also have DBA slotted on the rear stock calipers and they're silent as well

It is funny that EBC has all sorts of warnings about 'wind noise' from their slotted rotors and no one else seems to. It seems strange that this would just be an EBC issue.

I've had the same rotors (ebc) and Hawk pads for almost 2 yrs. Same exact sound as op described. I think its normal, I just learned to ignore it with the windows down.

My DBAs make a ton of noise, at first I thought it might be the backing plates and it would go away but they've been on for close to two years. Even my wife noticed and asked, "what's that noise?" All I could answer was, "My high $$ rotors!"
