Some of us live in states that aren't that strict or have no smog laws to begin with. My tours in the military helped me learn how many states out there actually down give flip if your cats are gone or aftermarket. I held on to mine simply in case the Kinetix started popping the CEL, I would have been able to revert to OEM setup. No lights thus far and I passed my smog just fine. Many states only link to OBDII cars - no sniffer needed.
That's good to know GAU-8 but Prinny lives in SoCal where our laws are beyond strict. We can't get by with HFCs/Test Pipes without switching back to OE cats for our license renewal, so my intention was to help him if possible....Gary
I knew where you were coming from. On the flip side, how many people on this forum that you know are in Cali and still don't care about having the OE cats anymore?
Back in the day, I had AZ tags on my car and went to get inspected. They did the sniffer and visual. The guy mentioned that he noted my aftermarket cats. He was nearly done with the test so he let it go. Then he saw that the car passed smog with better numbers than when that model year was new. Never heard another word about them.

Anyone who is smart would know to hang on to them out here. Haven't used mine in years but I still have them.
Yah, I see. I'm glad to be moving to AZ soon, where this isn't so much a problem. I actually just smogged the G locally. They didn't even look under the car. They turned the car on long enough to verify it was at operating temps and then plugged in to the OBDII connector. Pass. Certificate. Gone.

it honestly shouldn't be that much. used pair should set you back 100-200. Somewhere in the middle usually.
You will have to pay for labor though since it's a pain in the a$$ to get to. Unlike most cars.

I think he meant the guy could get them new for that much, which isn't that far off. I had a Lincoln Mk VIII. It ran sluggish most of the time. I took it to an exhaust shop that showed me my cats were clogged (prolly from low octane fuel). To replace them with OE cats was $4800!!!!! Right cat, left cat and center cat before resonator. Lincoln listed all 3 for that price. I found a guy on the Lincoln forums that made Mustang Cobra headers fit the Lincoln(primary tubes had to be massaged a bit to fit). He custom fabbed headers, I bought Magnaflow mufflers and 2 cats. He built it all and included the O2 bungs with a full custom exhaust build for $2600 out the door. That was a bargain compared to the OE setup and gained power doing so.
Also, not that hard to get to with a couple 10" extensions to cover the bolt on each side pointed at the top side of the motor. I did mine in a driveway on ramps and jackstands.
