Catalytic Converter Problem help please?

I failed smog a few weeks ago and I haven't had a chance to do something about it until now. I brought my car over to a friend of my uncle's that does work on cars and after a day he figured that there was something wrong with my catalytic converter. Says that it'll run me around $2000 for a OEM one-like one and $1800 for an aftermarket one. I'm not entirely sure if that includes labor, but I'm not sure what to do at this point.

That's alot of money, but is that a good deal to do something like that?

There's also another way, but it would cost $300.. the car wouldn't be getting fixed though.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Could I get something like this?

Do you guys know how much install should cost?

If you get hfc just bring them to a muffler shop off the car and have them weld something on for like 40 bucks

Doing more research as we speak and umm yeah I'll probably post a WTB in the marketplace for OE cats. And forget buying new cats. That's bull.. just looked up the costs for them.

$1800 for aftermarket cats/labor.........

HFC + OEM heat shield is a good route, just make sure whichever you go with is known to pass smog because not all of them will.

Yeah I know -_-.. I feel dumb for even maybe considering that now after I looked stuff up lol

HFC + OEM heat shield sounds interesting. Not sure how exactly i'd go about doing it though and how much it would cost.. passing smog is my main priority at the moment. Getting some used OE cats would probably be the cheapest route, but I wouldn't mind spend a few hundred extra if that's all it would take for something maybe a bit better

I appreciate the feedback from everyone though! Saved me a lot of money haha

I have a set of OEM cats with about 35K miles on them, I'm not sure how much shipping will be but shoot me a PM if interested!

As a temporary solution, you could just borrow someones cats to get the smog out of the way. Im sure someone near OC/LA has some laying around.

Before someone else suggests going to a bone yard to picking up used OE cats, that won't happen! It's illegal to sell used cats here in CA. You should grab the ones our member from Arizona offered you or borrow a set just to pass your smog test. HFCs would be a waste of your hard earned $$ because odds are they won't pass smog....some do but for the most part they will fail! Most of us that have HFCs/Test pipes were smart enough to keep the OE cats just to pass smog....Gary

I'm in Vegas. I have stock cats in the garage. I would go $150 plus shipping if you're interested. If the AZ guy doesn't pan out, hit me up with a PM. We can work something. Came off an '06 sedan. Had 37K on the odo when I removed them.
