There's nothing more important for the life of your engine than what oil/filter you're using. For $38= the dealership isn't using synthetic and the OE oil filters are mostly cardboard....that's not much of a deal if you care about what you drive! When a mechanic checks your brake pads he's not really measuring but getting some idea of how thick your pads are compared to new....50% wear or 90% should start looking for new pads.

To my understanding, they don't usually take off wheels to check the brakes. You can just look at the outside pad through the spokes of the wheel, and unless something is wrong with the caliper, the inside is usually pretty close. I doubt anyone actually measures the thickness, you just kind of eyeball it, and it's not that hard to guestimate, since the pads start at like 10-12mm.
The sales clerks at the dealers don't know crap and don't really talk to the mechanic unless there's a question the can't bs their way through.

I use Synthetic, but the Nissan/Infiniti books specify that the G35 is rated to use Standard. Just an FYI for those who think their specific dealerships are cutting corners.
As far as the pads go - there is no need to actually measure them IMO. The techs jsut eyeball them. The only time you need to have the pads measured in Canada is if you're having the car Safetied. Changing the pads when they reach 50% is very excessive. I usually try to aim for 10-15% (as per my best guestimation). If you wait until the pad is completely worn, it will cause damage to the rotor too. Depending on the rotor type and thickness, you might end up needed new rotors too which means your little brake dilemma just got a whole lot bigger.
