Oil recomendation for weather change
Oil recomendation for weather change
whats up everyone, gott another question for all you car gurus out there.
I apologize if this question has already been answered in a different thread, wasnt really sure how to search for a question as complex as this.
so not too long ago i discovered my g35 was burning oil at a rather fast pace than it was when i got it swapped (vq35) so i read that one thing to try was switching weights depending on weatether climate. So i switched from 5w-30 to 10-30 as it was the middle of summer and it worked somewhat well. Ive gone about three months (almost 3000 miles) and have burned less than a full quart.
So im planning to do another oil change soon, although im not sure what weight to put in this time because winter is going to be coming up, and living in northern virginia, the temps can get as low as 45 degrees the first couple months. Should I stick with 10w or go back to 5w? I assume the reason 10w worked is because it is thicker and less likely to burn in the heat?
any input on this is appreciated

That said, I have seen oil consumption reduced when using 5 vs 10w oils, but that could be from different base stocks.
My advice: try adding some 2 cycle oil to your gas. Seriously. Another forum had members have some serious consumption reduction. You can google tcw-3 and see what I'm talking about. Usually 700:1 is good for the ratio.
My Altima burned the most on synthetic. I used the cheapest dino I could (mostly 5w30/10w30 onsale). Most VQ35s burn, from my experience.
they start around 45 but mid to late winter it can go down to 20 sometimes. still stick with 10w30?
I would, but don't take my advice. where i'm at the mornings are in the mid to high 20's already. right now i have 10w30. But will be switching to 5w30 soon b/c it can get into the negatives here.
