ecu doesnt send voltage. just signal. even at constant rate your coil shouldnt melt. not saying it cant, just saying it shouldnt. most likely cause is a short in the harness.

Follow the troubleshooting steps in the FSM

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/G35/Sedan/2004/ec.pdf

"The engine has an ECM to control major systems such as fuel con-
trol, ignition control, idle air control system, etc. The ECM accepts
input signals from sensors and instantly drives actuators. It is essen-
tial that both input and output signals are proper and stable. At the
same time, it is important that there are no malfunctions such as vac-
uum leaks, fouled spark plugs, or other malfunctions with the engine...."

See diagram on page EC 92

I'm wondering if a shorted #5 spark plug could be the cause of your problem?

It might be more economical to let an Infiniti dealer find the root cause of your problem?

With a sixteen year old vehicle perhaps its time for a new one?
A new one comes with all new parts and a warranty

Good luck

I'd try replacing the spark plug and see if that fixes the issue. Cheap possible fix even if it doesn't work.

It gets hot due to probably shorted windings?

Measure the resistance from a good one to compare

A winding is part of a coil inductor. Switching 12v on and off rapidly induces a high voltage in the secondary winding to generate the high voltage necessary to fire a spark plug.
This part is known as a coil pack. One required for each cylinder

See page EC 590

You may want to consider having a pro diagnose your problem.

Check all your ignition and sensor fuses

Possibly a short or blown fuse
