A good habit is to feel the gears mesh as you push it in.

 

Yeap, and using the soft touch that we refer to allows exactly that. If you hard shift it, you can just jam it past the synchros but with the 'finger' shifting, you can feel the synchros' teeth and it can slip right in when it matches.
