05 rev up - Change in Exhaust tone when downshifting/decelerating.. pls help🤯

New here - so I apologize if I’m not posting this in the right spot.
I have a 2005 g35 rev up. Coupe/manual
I have straight piped exhaust with no cats ect lol
injen cai and it is tuned - up rev.

I had my clutch, flywheel throw out bearing ect and fork assembly changed recently. After getting the car back, it started almost dieing when I would come to a stop, it would bog out Rpms right down it would almost die and then it started actually stalling out. So I cleaned my throttle body, changed my cai filter and did the re learn procedures. Fixed that problem!! BUT then I started having this issue - sometimes the car will idle a bit higher than normal. When I am decelerating/down shifting - my exhaust sounds completely different it’s super annoying and I feel like the Rpms are dropping slower?…. All I know is when I would down shift and decelerate before, the exhaust was more of like rumble with sometimes a pop, but it would have this like rumble sound . But now it’s like my exhaust is screaming at me instead. I have no idea what is going on, it’s hard to explain but I know my car and I know it wasn’t like this before. It is not throwing any codes. Sometimes I feel like I smell a weird smell, I’m used to the smell of fumes since I don’t have cats ect but I feel like it’s a different smell …. It’s really annoying and I have no idea what it could be…. I might take it to a shop tmrw but I hate letting people touch my car because it seems that anytime it’s in the shop they mess up things and I’ve had a shop really f*ck my car up and it actually caught fire when I got it back so I don’t trust anyone with it now but at this point I feel like I don’t have a choice.

any info/advice would be appreciated alot

Any questions just ask as I said it’s a bit hard to explain but I tried lol

thanks

alsoooo**** I don’t think it is related but I am pretty sure my power steering pump is done as it’s squealing ect but that’s not my concern atm - but thought I should add it in

I believe there are two idle air controller valves on our cars. Maybe just one though. But I’ve heard they can clog up and or break. Might be worth to investigate this. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Checked maf sensor?

edit: if your power steering is squealing this indicates you’re low on fluid. Add to the correct amount and find where you’re leaking fluid. If you leave it low on fluid too long then this will burn out your pump.

These engines don't have an idle air valve, it's a learned algorithm that you set using the idle air recalibration steps in the FSM, section EC - Engine Controls under "basic service procedures".

I'm betting you didn't get something put back together correctly on the intake tube or it's got a torn boot or something. Pay particular attention to the PCV hose that goes from the intake tube down to the left valve cover directly below the throttle body. There is no hose clamp on the VC and it's easy to pull that tube up off it's nipple a bit which causes a vacuum leak.

I strongly recommend adding a clamp to that hose.

Your PS squeal could just be a loose belt, it makes a loud WHINE sound when it's failing, not a squeal.

As for the change in exhaust tone, are you sure you got all the gaskets on properly when putting the mid pipe back on? It's kind of hard to screw it up but if you didn't torque them back on properly it might not be sealing.

thank you for replying - I did have somebody mention to me yesterday that it could be a vacuum leak but there is no hissing sound or anything which usually comes with that issue - and I did not have maf cleaner with me the day I cleaned the throttle body but I knew I should have done that at the same time - I will check it out and try to get that cleaned today

I appreciate your reply! Thank you for the info I will check all of this out today!!

with the exhaust - when they pulled my tranny to do my clutch they actually were not able to get my exhaust off I watched them struggle with it - so they ended up pulling drive shaft and taking the tranny out that way bc they could not get my exhaust off from the manifold too much back pressure or something idk.

one thing I did forget to mention though is this issue is not constant so that is what is throwing me off - I mean majority of the time this is happening but randomly it will run/sound how it’s supposed to but then not long after it will go back to sounding terrible lol. I tried to show someone yesterday what I mean with the Rpms/sound when downshifting/decelerating and the car was acting normal?!!! But then later on when I was by myself it started right up again.

that’s why I am so frustrated because it’s not constant - and there is no CEL light/codes

I will check everything out that you have mentioned and see if I find anything 🤞🏽

Sounds like they just didn't know how to remove the header to cats/test pipes bolts You have to do it from up in the engine bay not from under the vehicle or you have zero leverage to bust those bolts loose that are like 45 ft/lbs.

As for the vacuum leaks, unless it's a HUGE leak you're not going to hear it over the normal engine noise.

thanks so much for the info!
I will check on everything you mentioned today see if I find anything.

one thing is this issue is not constant - I mean it’s like this majority of the time but sometimes out of no where it will run/act/sound right and this is what confuses me the most.

with the exhaust - when I had it in for the clutch ect, I watched them struggle to get my exhaust off from the manifold. Once they got all the bolts off they still could not get it to disconnect. So they told me they were going to have to leave it on and pull the drive shaft and shimmy the tranny out that way.
& the sound isn’t constant like I just mentioned - randomly when I’m decelerating it will sound exactly how it’s supposed to!

at first I thought this may be an issue caused by a sensor but if that were the case it would be throwing a code I would think. I will look into everything you mentioned and see though.

Any possibility this could be my ecu or my tune needs to be re done?!

lol yes I do believe now that they didn’t know what they were doing lmao it honestly seems like no shops do around here 🤦🏽‍♀️ But side note I do not have cats or anything lol
I will check all the hoses ect everything you’ve mentioned and also clean my MAF
Il give you an update!!

nooo I do not have cats lol
where I circled is where they were attempting to disconnect it

Where I have circled in red is where they were trying to disconnect it lol they struggled a lot to get the bolts out but once they did it still would not disconnect lol

Ohh the y pipe; that’s weird. I just did my clutch and struggled to get most the exhaust nuts off but once the nuts were off the exhaust slid right apart. 95k on my g

Yeah the shop just didn't know what they were doing. Even if the y-pipe bolts were fused into place and needed to be air chiseled or sawzalled off it's not that big of a deal, drill out the existing bolt holes in the cats/test pipes and put in new ones. Not a big deal.

Anyone who would leave the y-pipe in place and try to do the clutch with it in place is almost definitely not the shop you want to be taking your car to for repairs.

They could have gone upstream a little and just unbolted the test pipes from the headers and left them attached to the y-pipe, there's plenty of options to give you the room needed to get the tranny out properly.

I think I finally found the culprit causing this problem! Wiring on harness for bank 1 sensor 2! It looks messed up/exposed, getting a closer look later. Have a code for ho2s heater control circuit low - p0037
hoping this is the issue!!

also, I love how when ever I explain this problem to someone they say it’s normal 😂 it’s not. And the a/f is going to 18.6 when it makes the annoying sound

will update later
