Diff / AXLES - Leak G35

Hey folks,

Anyone ever experience this?

I assume the fluid in question is diff fluid? or grease from axles?

It's from the seals for the stub shafts on the differential. This happens when the differential isn't ever maintained, basically you end up with a lot of metal in the gear oil in differentials, if you don't change the fluid to remove this metal it ends up destroying the seals as the metal glitter rubs on the rubber seals.

If it's not DRIPPING on the ground I would just change the diff gear oil and call it a day.

Maintenance interval for the differential is every 30k miles.

Thanks Cleric,

I did change the fluid on the diff... as well as the diff bushings all 3. this was like 50k miles ago. I guess I will have to do another change shortly.

The seals are quite cheap at 10bucks a piece... might do those..

Yeah and fortunately it's not that difficult to replace them on the R200 diffs.

Thanks again...

Looked into it. I guess ill need a slide hammer for the job.

When inserting the new axle shaft seals... do I grease the inside and outside of the seals? is there a nissian service bulletin or anything that specifies to do so? I'm sure the inside.... where the stub shafts slide into... but what about outside the rubber seals? where they seat onto the receiver groove.

You shouldn't need a slide hammer the CV shafts unbolt from the shafts. You can pull them out with a pry bar and just make sure they are fully seated in. There is a special Nissan tool for the seals, but you can buy a seal driver kit.

I've done it both ways, it can be tricky to find the right angle with a prybar since you can't pry against the teeth of the wheel speed ring. Last time I wedged a piece of wood against the subframe to get my prybar in the right orientation, firm tap with a sledgehammer on the prybar and it came right out, that's probably how I'll do it in the future unless I already have the axles completely off the vehicle. A slide hammer is definitely easier IF you have the axles out.

They seat into the differential carrier just like a normal internally seated CV axle, regular friction ring on the end to retain it.
