Why is gas door on passenger side?
For what it's worth...
A report was done on static discharge when sliding in and out of drivers seat during fueling. In some cases enough static charge was developed to ignite the fumes. Some car manufacturers have already considered this when designing cars from a safety standpoint.

WTF
I used to own a 91 G20. The gas door was on the left. I believe the European version was called the Nissan Primera. The gas door on that was also on the left. I have also seen American mades with the door on the right. I don't know why - all I know is since I bought my G, the right side is correct.

Guess they left everything set up for RHD and just moved the steering wheel over
It is for crash safety reasons.
Studies have found that most side impacts are on the DRIVERS side of the vehicle. Placing the fuel fill pipe on the passenger side reduces the chance of spilled gas/fire during an accident.

The cell phone theory is complete BS though.
People who worry about the location of the gas door, really have way too much time on their hands! And, you may want to stretch the hose at Costco across your car, but not me, that can scuff the paint easily!

Very simple question, they do not sell enough G35's in the US to make it worth altering the design for driver side gas. In the case of the maxima, they sell like 20392039X more of them in the US so it is worth the cost
