Maybe we could get one that when you push the button on the side of the key fob the key shoots out kinda like the Oldfolkswagens. Hey, that way we can combine the key and fob together kinda like the new Honda's. Lets call it the Infinikeyfobondawagen or something. j/k I had a long day at work and I am tired and just trying to unwind. Yey!!!

Unless I'm misunderstanding, it sounds like what most of you want is a new plastic housing so that it doesn't look like nissan's. well... to get a quality plastic piece, the tool will easily be several thousand dollars. Unless this group buy accumulates, say 400 people minimum, there's no way this fob will go for $25. A cheaper quicker prototype mold could be made that would server fewer people, but the quality would not be there so there wouldn't be much point. Even then, you'd probably want to redesign the buttons as well which would add more to the cost. The tools would be over $10K easily.

It can be done, but seems like an expensive itch to scratch just to break away from Nissan.

I might just machine my own.

It's not about breaking away from nissan... but the newer mazda's even have that nifty little flip key fob, not to mention bmw's, mini, MB, VW, audi, and on and on and on. It's just a really ho-hum key design.

Really, the only mfg's who have such crappy key fobs as us are most of nissan, ford, GM, and hyundai (and others).

Anyways, if I ever get around to doing it, I'll post some pics and refuse to make any more cause I'm sure it'll be a huge pain.

The best way to create a new casing for the key fob is this:
Mold some clay (or wax) around the existing case and get the shape you want. Then, you will have to somehow cut through the clay and separate the 2 halves of the case. Send just the case w/ clay on it over to China and they can do an inverse mold and make a batch of the new modified cases. The biggest benefit here is that the inside of the case will still accept the electronics/buttons and still snap closed like the OEM.

Injection molding the new cases would be MUCH cheaper than machining cases out of metal or plastic.

I know someone who did this with some old replacement car parts that break frequently (that are no longer made) and is now eBaying them.

That's exactly what I said. you can make them cheaper and quicker, but the quality will be crap. quick molding services like you describe are decent for getting a general picture of how something will look and feel (but rarely how it will function). The mold itself is very soft when compared to a production level tool. Therefore, the plastic will be very brittle b/c the tool itself can't take the pressures needed to properly pack out the part (and if you're really lucky, you *might* get a decent finish on the part) and it will still be relatively expensive. Definitely not something you could depend to have on a keychain and throw around and not break. I deal w/ this stuff every day. Unfortunately, the only way to get a good quality reliable part is to spend the money and get a good tool. If there were a cheaper quicker easier way, everyone would do it. There are no shortcuts. It won't be easy and it won't be cheap.

Or, you could just do what I did for $15

With the engraving on my initials on the back
This way everyone knows they are for an Infiniti
