i was reading up on radartest.com and basically here's what i got out of it.

the BEL PRO RX65 is the best overall detector, it detects POP which the V1 doesn't. but the V1 has the best laser detection. the Escort is a slightly trimmed down version of the BEL.

so it depends on where you live. in long island, i know they use a lot of laser, but i'm not sure if they have POP yet. one article did mention New York State as using POP, which means our troopers on the northern and southern states could be using them.

i was all about the V1 until i read these articles, now i'm leaning more towards the BEL, especially if they are using POP in the area.

does anyone know what the most widely used type is in nyc/long island?

If they are not using already, they soon will be! I love my Bel, but I have yet to be able to compare it to anything other than what's in my truck and is to old to compare to. It works great, picked up my first cop on Sunday on the LIE. Not many false alarms which is great and it has a nice mute button on the plug in! I will soon be ordering the wire so I can hardwire it......as soon as the weather warms up!

Yeah, I bought my escort 8500 not too long ago and it has definitely saved my @$$ numerous times. From what I understand, the Val 1 has a slightly better sensitivity to laser but weaker on the radar vs. the escort slightly stronger on radar but a more limited range on laser. In my opinion...if you get tagged with laser...most of the time you're already screwed. The 8500 has the Shift Link laser jammer available for it also...how well it works..dunno; maybe it's good, maybe it's just a lot of smoke blown up yo @$$ to spend more money...either way can't go wrong with either.

what band was the LIE cop on? Laser, POP or one of the K's? Also, which was it... a NYC/Nassau/SuffolkCO cop?

It was nassau suffolk border, nassau cop and i forgot what it came up as, i believe KA, yeah KA - I don't think POP shows up differently. Not sure exactly how pop would to be honest. I would assume as radar but probably different strengths????
