strange engine knocking noise at idle

strange engine knocking noise at idle
I installed my stillen intake eariler today and loved the sound of my new intake. But when I started it up a few minutes ago, at idle I heard a subtle knocking noise followed by a jolt of rough at idle. What can this be?

Bkchang79, Could it be something to do with the Stillen install? If it were me, I'd retrace my steps back to the beginning, checking all connections & clamps.
Good luck.

Yea check that everything is nice and tight. It could be that part of the intake tube is not completly sealed and there could be too much air going in the engine. Yea.. belive or not too much air can be bad.

Re: strange engine knocking noise at idle
Mmmmmm good point hadn't thought about it that way.
I'm just talking out of experience with my past car (although it was a 95 Golf w/ a 2."slow" engine).
I went to Jiffy lube and for some reason they disconected the intake tube from the air box. On my way home the car started to stall and act funny I reconnected everthing and it was fine. I though it was because the engine was getting too much air so the car was running too lean (too much air + too little gas = not good enough combustion).
But now that I think about it, it could also have been too much air turbulance in the MAF sensor. The computer gets all sorts of crazy air readings from the sensor and tries to adjust for the amount of gas sprayed. Readings are crazy computer gets crazy = f*kd up ride.
Forced induction from Turbos and SC force air in the closed and controlled system within the enigne. That's what my logic tells me. I'm I right? I dunno.
Any of the pros out there care to comment???
DYK? Another function of the air filter is to reduce the air turbalance of air going in the engine.

Re: strange engine knocking noise at idle
well the car is idling like normal now, it's probably the computer trying to learn the new toy I put in. Now I have to find out how to get rid of the whistling noise the stillen intake makes. Any suggestions?

bk! There's a post around here that is about that whistling thing. Some ppl like but I guess the intake shouldn't be doing that sound. Sorry I coldn't find the thread but if you do a search you'll find it. It's recent one so it shold be easy to find. I just got lazy.
