5th gear grinding?

Hey quick question-

I ahve 20k miles on my 2004 6mt coupe, and on monday i noticed that when i put it into 5th gear it isn't easy to get it in and it makes a really loud noise once it goes in; once it's in, however, it drives fine. This happens pretty much every time i put it into 5th unless i push the clutch in for like 2 seconds and just eaaaaaase it in. Is this gear grinding? If not, what is it? I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to have some stuff installed but I just wanted some information on what the possible problem could be and not sound like a complete idiot Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hockeyplay95

Thanks--I took it in and told them what the problem was and they said they would look at it. Do you think they are going to replace the whole transmission? If so, how long do you think that will take?

I'll second papagz...
WELCOME friend!
My Name is Binar and I am a Transmission-aholic
It has been 4 months since my last Transmission
I would like to thank this group (G35Driver) for their help with my addiction.

Oh, and it shouldn't take more than a day to put in the tranny after they get it into the shop.

its a nice club. should take 1-2 days max to get it all done if your dealer is somewhat decent.

Well I got bad news--my dealer says I need to replace the clutch in about 2-3 months and its NOT COVERED UNDER WARRENTY. What the hell? There are only 20k miles on it and I already have to replace the clutch? How is that not under warrenty? I know i downshift a lot but that shouldn't require a new clutch after 20k miles. Should I try and go aftermarket? Dealer says it'll cost about $700 to replace the clutch w/ install. What do you think?

Tell them to go to hell. I had my tran replace not that long ago! I brought a Exedy OEM Replace cluch kit for $250 shipped on EBAY, They just charged me 1 Hour labor to put it in, which I could do in 15min, but just don't feel like takeing the tran out again!
Yeah cluch they don't cover, because its part of wear and tear! Just like the Brembo on my car, they have no warrenty on them, as soon has you sign your name on the bill of sale, you are on your own!

can this be an excuse for the dealer to replace my clutch? I have trouble once in a while putting into first when im stopped at a stop light with the clutch fully pressed.

I use Exedy because that is what Nissan, Honda, Toyota and many other OEM car company, Signal, Top Secret also use them too ! I have never have any prob with Exedy! I got OEM instead of Stage 1 is because my GF is small and only 5"2 so she is not that strong! And She drives it 2-3 times a week! But they make stronger holding powers ones too! I would give them a try! Also If you care I got my from Ebay seller name gripforce-clutches, he send it the same day I order has long has it before 4PM!

90% of the time dealer wont replace clutch under warranty. rather, they will blame any transmission problem on the clutch and have you pay for a replacement. when the problem persists, they see that the tranny is at fault, replace that under warranty, but you dont get any of your money back for the clutch which is about 1k

LOOK the clutch is either bad or not. If you don't believe it ask them to show you the bad parts if they replace it. Otherwise take the free diagnosis and go get a new clutch, aftermarket better deals anyway. Then if it still has the same problem go back to the dealer.

If that actually happens be highly pis$ed off and rub their friggin noses in that $hite!

i went into the dealer today after finding out about this problem and had it checked out. the dealer said that while the transmission is being replaced i should replace my clutch and flywheel. the tech said it was only good for another 5k. by the way i have about 25k. they quoted me at 1700! just for the clutch and flywheel. the dealer said that they would only charge me an hour of labor which is 120. i think i will go with the jim wolf set up. what do you think?
