Tire wear expectations

I have the "sport wheel" package and salesman told me my rears would only last about 15,000 mi. Fronts a little longer. What are your experiences if you own the '03 G35 Coupe? I will never "track" the vehicle but enjoy a good twistie. Other than some spirited occasional driving, I am not abusive on tires.

Re: Tire wear expectations

i used to sell tires, so i do have some real knowledge

first, michelin's are known for their durability, even with sport tires which are a much softer compound & tend to wear faster than normal passenger tires. the generic rule for estimating tread life of a tire is to take the treadwear rating * 20 = mileage. (i'm aware that's not the official formula or definition of treadware, but its what we used and was usually accurate).

for our stock tires, that gives you roughly 40K mi. the biggest thing you can do is check your tire pressure regulary, like every time you fill your tank. incorrect tire pressure causes more wear & tear on your tires. its really important for the G since we can't rotate like a normal passenger tire. i'm only at 8Kmi on my G, and so far my tires look great, i don't see anything that indicates they are half way worn.

Well - good to know that someone else has 20k on there coupe :-S

I can't really comment on tire wear for the stock - but my SO-3's are wearing awesome. I though for sure I would have to replace them at 15k, and they have atleast another 10k in them.

for those that have 15k miles +, do you guys rotate them side to side and have it rebalanced every so often? if so, how often.

Re: Tire wear expectations

I've got 20K on my 6MT and my fronts look like they'll make 40+ and my rears maybe around 30K...and I'm not afraid to get crazy in this car...so I'm somewhat impressed so far with the wear...

Re: Tire wear expectations

if price isn't your biggest concern, i would always recommend michelin over almost any other brand. i've just had the best luck w/those. however, on my 328is i did use kuhmo (?) ecsta's which were fantastic and about half the price of the michelin and bridgestone (17" wheel, think it was 245/50/17)

anyway, can't go wrong w/michelin, www.tirerack.com usually has good spec information about various brands & prices.

Re: Tire wear expectations

i only have 12k miles on mine and i will be lucky to get 5k more miles out of the rear. i do not drive too agressive but i do drive a lot on the highway @ 80mph, my guess is the centrifugal force has something to do with it. my fronts are another story they look new. i check my tire pressure regularly and keep them @ 35 psi. oh yeah i forgot to mention i live in south florida and the roads are much more rougher to help traction in the rain.

Re: Tire wear expectations

well i just put my snowsports on last friday, and with only ~1250 miles, my fronts are showing wear that shouldn't be showing until ~10000 miles, but my rears are fine. i hope to god they last 40000 :P
