Drive-by-wire throttle lag

I am considering purchasing a new G35 with the 6 spd manual . I just test drove one and noticed that when I hit the accelerator there is a short but definite pause before the car really accelerates (almost like mild turbo lag). It does it every time in every gear. The same thing happened when I drove a 2003 Maxima SE with a 6 spd (same engine as the G35, slightly detuned). I then read on Autoweek and Autonet.ca that this is the way the drive-by-wire throttle works with the new 3.5 V6 in the Maxima, Altima and G35. Is this the norm or does it just happen on some of the cars? Is there a fix? Does this lag disappear once the engine is broken in? I love the car otherwise but would probably not buy one if that is the norm. I expect instant throttle response on a normally aspirated V6. Thanks.

Robin

That is interesting. I know some Audi owners with the DBW and they say there is even better throttle response. Somethine doesn't seem right.

I think what you are feeling is the VDC kicking in and not allowing the rear wheels to spin when you mash the gas.

I think I know what he's talking about. He's talking about how the VQ engine doesn't start really pulling till after 4k rpm. He's probably shifting really early.

Re: Drive-by-wire throttle lag

It is a DBW lag in the system. WHen you hit the brakes, about 25% of the engine power is cut. When you let go of the brakes, unfortunately it takes too long for the power to come back.

My DBW TDI (and the other A4 platform cars) cuts 100% of the engine power.

I basically had to modify the way I drive because the DBW kills the satisfaction of heel-toe

Too Bad most cars are going to DBW, even the new WRX Sti.

Read it on the Subaru web site link provided by one of the WRX Forums.

Real Interesting information, everything except the price. Think they are waiting on Mitsubishi to set their price first.

Actually I think it was in the Subaru President's speech, but now I can't find the darn thing. Kind of surprised me when I saw it, have not made my mind up if I like DBW yet.

Re: Drive-by-wire throttle lag

Robin,

I'm brand new to this fourm and its nice to see someone having the same experience to share my griefs.

Yes I too noticed slow open throttle response, but seems to start improving as breakin progresses.

If you notice I specified "open", thats getting better. "Close" throttle response is hanging quite a bit and actually revs the engine higher if I push the clutch in less than a ~1/2 sec. after taking off the gas.

Re: Drive-by-wire throttle lag

i actually felt the same thing on the first test drive that i went on today, until i had a salesman that took me out and showed me how to get pass that lag. he said to press the pedal down and hold it down with upshifting. and it did work. the lag was gone. as for the wheel spin. i turned off the "VDC" and took off in 1st gear and made the car fish tail pretty easy. i felt great and i felt like i never lost control of the car. the 1st salesman i went out with stayed pretty quiet for awhile i guess i scared him. the 2nd guy told me to turn it back on or else he'd have to take the keys from me. hehehehe. the "VDC" is something pretty good. it will stop you from getting into too much trouble.
