Gas Milage on Highway

I did about 300 miles of open highway cruising yesterday and today to visit my bro up in West Point. I just filled up the tank and found out I averaged 20 miles per gallon. WHAT THE [censored]???? YES, that's right, 20 MPG on open, non traffic roadways going between 65-80mph.

Can someone please tell me that the gas milage gets better the more you drive the car? I'm ready to file a complaint against Infiniti for false advertising. I fully expected 25mpg and didn't get on the gas at all for the whole trip. I'm thoroughly disgusted and disappointed.

Anyone else have MPG highway estimates? Is it my car or everyone's?

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
I have not yet taken the car on a full hwy run for an entire tank of gas, but with a 60/40 (hwy/city) mix, I consistantly average 24-25 mpg. Mine doesn't even seem to care if I drive it hard, or granny it. Its always the same. I find it interesting, but I have no complaints.

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
I average about 20 to 21 combined driving, in a few instances I have obtained as much as 24 MPG , on highway driving, not great but not bad.
From new to now 15000 miles mileage has improved about 2 MPG, maybe a little more.

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
official mpg tests are done at 55 mph.

what octane fuel did you use.

i wonder how it will be in NJ over the winter when they switch fuel, statewide.

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
My great variance has something to do with which gas station I pick.

After getting ~16mpg or less in the city for about 3 months, I got it out on the interstate for a short road trip.. At 75mph+ the entire way, I got at least 24mpg. I was shocked. Especially with an AT.. and at 75+. For the first 200 miles, I wasnt doing that hot.. but the last half of the trip, my mileage really jumped. Maybe it takes the ECU an hour or two to figure out you arent in the city any longer : / dunno

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
I have the 6MT and driving 55 I got 30 mpg on a tank. Driving 60 i got 29mpg. This was on open highway little traffic. Just got a speeding ticket so I took it easy on the way home and thats how I had time to kill playing with the trip computer

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
you need to stay constant in any speed you want to(best in 55) in order to achieve maximum gas mileage... if you have navi, then check the fuel economy while you driving, you will soon notice gas mileage(the one with leaf that has green lights goes up and down) goes down as soon as you increase little bit of speed...

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
Don't know if this will help since I have a 5AT. Ever since I've had the car I've tracked my gas mileage. Albeit that I'm probably off since I over top my tank a little every time but I average 18.2 MPG with about 50/50 HWY/CTY driving. The best mileage I've ever gotten was 24.5 MPG and that was on a road trip with the Capital G's.

When I first got the car I was around 15-16 MPG. I'd give it some time before you send a nasty letter to Infiniti. Good luck.

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
When my father bought his Maxima in 2000, he said he averaged 18 mpg and now he's up to 24/25 mixed driving. He says its no biggie and that the engine will break in and be more efficient. However, on such a long drive, its really a disappointment to get such crappy milage. If you guys say it'll get better, then I'll just have to cross my fingers, but I will file a complaint at my dealer and see if the car checks out, just in case something goes wrong down the line.

Thanks for your input, atleast I'm not so pissed anymore!

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
I think the 6MT gets slightly better MPG than the 5AT and most people seem to fall in the 20-24 range. But there are a few people who seem to get really low numbers - just unlucky I guess.

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
My G (5AT) gets about 19-21 mixed, and up to 30 on the higway. I went up to Purdue from Indianapolis in my G and got about 28mpg. I just made the same trip in my FX and got about 23mpg. I shouldn't be getting better gas mileage than you in an SUV... how are you calculating your mileage?

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
I also get the SUV gas mileage. I average 15 MPG driving in the city and around 17 highway driving. My father's 2002 Maxima is a little bit better, but very close nevertheless. My wife's heavy BMW X5 (over 4000 lbs) gets better gas mileage.
I guess we have to thank our engines for that.

Re: Gas Milage on Highway
Well, the FX uses the same engine.... it's even cranking out a few more horses than the sedan. Yet for some reason, some sedans are getting more pitiful gas mileage. Hm... Gemlins!
