Hey MrE, I just caught up on this thread. So sorry to hear about your accident, and I feel your pain at having to pay out of pocket for the damage. While it's probably stating the obvious right now, I'd just like to suggest (to you and others) that the VDC should be left on (almost) all the time, and certainly any time you're driving fast on public roads. It's there to bail you out of situations like the one you had, and it works.
As for me, I've never shut it off, and have no expectation that I ever will. For my 51 year old butt, the car is still WAY fun even with it on.
Here's hoping your car comes out good as new, and that your story here helps others to avoid the same misfortune.

It's all about knowing your limits. Just like the VDC is there for a reason, there is an on/off switch for a reason as well. The problem is that far too many people (not just kids) think they know their limits but don't.
In this case it was only property damage, and limited to the owner; it's doesn't get truely sad until people are injured (or killed).
