driving cross country with a g

Hi, with school starting again next week, i now have a dilemma: wether to ship the g from seattle to penn for like 1300 which takes 3 weeks(!?) and taking a plane (240), or to drive the g cross country from wa to penn.

It would cost less to just drive, but would it be safe for the car? how long should i drive it before giving it a rest? i was planning on driving it straight without sleeping.. just pit stops.. but now, i think im going to sleep like 3 days and go slow.

So, would it be safe for the g to be driven cross country? it's a 06 coupe, with 1800 mi on it... i did one oil change at 1414. And does it usually take that long to ship the car? thanks for your help.

Well I drove my G35 coupe from north Indiana down to south Florida this summer and back. The G did perfect in every way (yes even gas mileage). The car will do great and you will even enjoy driving the whole way.

the seats are awesome for long trips. It will be just fine, even if you floored it all the way...except for the gas mileage if you do. Other wise you should get up to 26 if you cruise the whole way.

I drove from Santa Barbara to Shreveport non-stop and didnt have any problems. It was actually a lot more comfortable than I thought it would be. If its a new car though, you should get a clear bra on it. Save you from all of the rock ships you will eventually get.

hey guys, thanks for the replies. i think i will drive all the way to penn now. 3000 miles. anyway, i meant is it mechanically safe to drive for long periods of time at constant rpms, given that i now have like 1900 miles on it?

i thought i had to vary the rpms constantly when the car is new... or is it already broken in? i've only gone up to 5k until 1500mi, and up to 6k a couple times after i got to 1500.

should i be varying rpm's the whole way through? like downshift then upshift and whatnot? and also, thanks for the clear bra idea. do dealerships sell and install them as well? i dont have time to order online, find a shop, etc. etc..

thanks a lot for the help!!

short story: the G is built for it.

wrap the front of the car with painter's tape. it's cheap and although it looks funny it will protect the front of your car while you drive. when you arrive it will come off without leaving resedue. the paint on the front of the car is notoriously weak, so this is a must. alternatively, buy a bra...

the G should be ok. tell the dealers what you intend on doing before you leave. have them change the oil (even if it was done recently). mechanically, once the engine is broken in, you should be ok. i did a 3hr drive when my car was new, trying to vary engine speeds and it was difficult.. then a week later i did a 1kmi drive, which was also difficult. in the end i used cruise control and varied the speed of it, also the gear i was in, but my car wasn't broken in. 30kmi later, my engine is fine. your engine is already broken in though, so i wouldnt worry! just set the cruise control and go. vary the speed (=rpm) if you want, but dont stress and waste gas by dropping a gear or two.... unless you get to some nice driving roads.

anyway, the G is built for cross country high speed travel. enjoy and be safe

It may not be cheaper to drive your car cross country

You have to factor in the high price for gas (premium owns you), where you are going to stay when you do take a break, what you will do for food, who if anyone is going to go with you (they will need to fly back home), etc. Plus, long journeys are really tough on your car, and cars need breaks as well, so you need to think about maintenance after you reach your destination. At a minimum you would need to have another oil change. I live in MD but I went to the Univeristy of Arizona and doing the drive back and forth is really expensive. Also, you may be young but if you haven't done any really long driving before this is going to seriously drain you and you may want to leave earlier than you plan to just to give yourself a break after the trip before class starts. What I did was I planned driving so many miles a day (usually around 800-1000), getting up really early and getting to your hotel at a decent hour to let you get rest for the next day. I would definitely think this thoroughly through, both driving and shiping.

I remember a fellow member here taking his coupe on a long-*** trip with his wife and two young kids... ...and luggage. Aside from a lack of legroom in back, I seem to recall him reporting that it did great. I seem to recall pics of the coupe all loaded up as well. Props to him, as I'm sure he'll turn out to be somewhat of a pioneer is G-coupe travel.

Got a clear bra for the hood but will try the painters tape for the fascia.. thanks for the idea! Is the G paint that delicate in the front?

To the guy who started this thread.. enjoy the trip!
