Is there any way to make this better? It's pretty lacking. I know Bose is notoriously difficult to upgrade, so I'm expecting to hear "it basically can't be done." I'm not willing to spend a bunch of money (over $500) to get this better. I guess i'm spoiled from the sound system I put in the Camaro I had I had polk audio components powered by a sound stream amplifier, some midgrade speakers in the rear, and a subwoofer.

 

Check the sticky in the audio forum. Yes it can be done. Depends on what you want to get out of it. Lots of folks have been dropping in infinity (the audio brand, hence the y) speakers and having luck. 2 things to keep in mind. The speakers, i believe, are 2 ohms. So regular 4 ohm speakers will be softer at the same volume level. 2, if you replace the amp, be aware that the bose head unit puts out differential signals. You'll need a converter or an amp that accepts those signals as inputs.

 

The difference in volume is minor, considering the Infinity as well as many other similar speakers are much more efficient speakers even with a higher impedance. And in general, overall better sound.
But on our Acura the Bose sucked a lot more than the G car, which IMO sounds half decent (if not great) in comparison.
I am sure the environment (acoustics, cabin size, speaker placement, etc.) are also factors.

one of the main reasons i didnt get the premium package on my coupe. I didn't think it sounded $2k better than stock.

 

I think the sound system in the G is not that bad....

 

in my 04 G i went from bose to an aftermarket head unit to various aftermarket speakers/sub configs.

the most noticable gain in SQ came from switching from stock bose to the 9835 head unit (on an otherwise stock setup). the entire system became more vivid, a little louder, and clearer. other people i used to drive with noticed the change and even asked about it.

adding the sub was noticable because it was a sub, but really beyond the h/u change its been a game of maintaining/bettering SQ with volume... its proven a difficult and expensive journey.

right now ive settled on focal 165k2p front + jl 10w6v2 sub in rear, 9835 + computer driving everything with jl 500/1, jl 300/2, bose amp. i plan to make no further changes.

 

Deal with the crappy sound if you are not willing to spend more than $500. All new speakers, subs, and amps will be well over $1000.00 guranteed (That is unless you are putting crappy components in). That does not include installation either. Then there's the double din. Modding the stereo is expensive bro.

 

I enjoy the bose sound quite a bit. In all honesty it does sound good. I've certainly heard better, as I used to install car audio systems in high school, but the bose is nice. The only lacking component was the bass. I fixed the problem by adding a high-end amp, a custom box with a 1000 watt sub. Now I have more bass than I need and can control the amp directly via remote. The highs and mids were never an issue.

Spent about $700 (have a friend still in the industry).

 

I know for sure that the non-premium Bose system sounded better then the Premium one. Don't ask me why, but it does. I had plenty of loaners with Premium and it just sound "boomy" and the highs weren't that greate. Wierd huh? Anywho, to start, just upgrade the speakers up front. Like some here mentioned, Infinity Kappas are good. I've had some Boston Acoustics (Pro line), and the are some of the nicest ones I've heard for a car.

 

I'm doing this right now. It's been 5 days of work so far and I'm still not close to done.

I've put in so far Eclipse AVN-5435 DVD Navi, Diamond Audio Hex Comps, Diamond Audio M3 co-ax 6.5" rear fill, Diamond Audio M3 Comps 6x9, Eclipse 4chnl amp, Diamond x-overs, PG mono-sub amp, sirius and a 4080 box. I ran all new wire to the doors, rears and rear deck. About 150ft of speaker cable. My trunk is still all torn apart as well as my back seats and center console.

Hopefully I can finish it all up by sunday.
