Brand new coupe... with problems? Is this normal?

Ok well I just bought a 2006 G35 6MT coupe about a month.

At first, I noticed the transmission wasnt the quitest and smoothest out there.

But now, I have found a problem that really is concerning.

Everytime I shift from 1st to 2nd, I hear this AWFUL loud grind. Almost right after, I hear this extremely load CLANK when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

The clanking noises always happen, no matter if its a fast shift at high speed, slow shift at low speed... etc.

The awful grind which I can hear and feel usually happens when I shift at over 3k RPM.

What should I do?

Im thinking of bringing it down to the dealer, hopefully I get my tranny (or any other clutch related problem) fixed or replaced

Dealer time.....the tranny problem for the 6mt coupes and sedans was never resolved. It's ironic that the MT tranny is full of problems while the 5AT has performed almost flawlessly. I don't understand why Infiniti cannot fix this problem one would think it would have been dealt with by now.

It seriously #@%# up my shifts, not because of any movement, but because I pay so much attention to it because the grinds and clanks are so loud.

Im sure people outside the vehicle can hear it as I shift near them.

I feel like im driving a car with 200k miles on it rather than a brand new one like mine with 400 miles on it.

Do you have a camcorder? I'd love to see a video from your passenger of you shifting (see you moving the shifter) and hear the audio with it....

If you do it I'll do the same in my 06 6mt and we can compare? I think mine's pretty darn quiet.

well the 5at.. nissan's had for years and is only imrpoving on it where as this is the 1st generation 6 speed transmission of any kind for nissan... so its really not that surprising.... the trannies in the 89-94 maximas constantly needed major owrk or replacement at about 100k miles.

"I may be old, I'm up in years.
But I can still climb a hill without shiftin' in my gears."

Incorrect. Nissans had 6 sp boxes (rwd format) since 1999, on the R34 Skyline GTR and the S15 Silvias. They were not very strong though.

Before auto tranny was made it was all MT 4spd or 5spd. Even then the tranny nissan made was weak. The sentra's tranny was notorious for braking down. Point is if Nissan can make a strong AT tranny why can't they make an MT that can stand up on it's own.

When I first got my coupe, I would get a grind going to 2nd gear sometimes. After a while, it went away. Some people said that the tranny needed breaking in.

Before you bring it to the dealership...do this....

I know you just got your car and its your first 6MT and learning on it, so it could be that your doing something wrong....

Take VDC off.
Start off smoothly in first, go upto around 4K rpm and shift to 2nd, but feather the clutch more than normal on the way up. Not crazy amounts, just feather it nice and slowly right before the engagement point. Does that work? The tranny is naturally loud, but it definitely should not grind...

just for the record, I've had my 06 6mt for about 5 months now and the 1 to 2 shift is still making me look retarded. 3 to4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6 ar smooth and normal. It sounds like the 1 to 2 is normal as well, normal meaning a really ****ty shift.

I head a head tech at infiniti drive mine to make sure, he said everything felt normal to him.

Definitely not the smoothest tranny in the world. Smoothest trannies can probably be found here:
