I am going for my oil change Fri morning, i ave a K&N filter for it... but what oil to use!?
I am going on a Road trip up the East Coast next week so i need the car to be in good order. Should i use whatever they recommend or should i bring oil with me? If so What Type?
Please help... I have no clue about this aspect of cars.
I drive the car really hard non stop, in sunny beautiful, hot as **** miami, if that makes any difference on the oil type?
Thanks

Re: Quick which Oil To USE????
Well, I have done quite a bit of research on this topic. To start, while the K&N is an EXCELLENT filter, the MOBIL 1 filter is a better filter for nearly the same price. You can get MOBIL 1 filters at Auto Zone (pt # M1-108 or M1-110). For oil, it depends. If you want dino oil, which I would suggest for oil changes before 6000 miles, go with Castrol GTX 5w-30. There is not a huge difference between dino oil, but Castrol GTX exceeds more qualitfications than other oils (including the Japanse engine wear test). If you want syn oil (I would recommend after 6000 miles), go with MOBIL 1 5w 30. While MOBIL 1 is not the best syn oil, for the price and the availability, it is an excellent oil. Also, unless you are going to be performance driving, your engine will not know the difference between Mobil and Amsoil. Some people argue the same about syn vs. dino, but I take the extra precaution for rough driving and spirited driving (and to make sure my engine lasts as long as I need it to).

Oh, and one more thing. If you are doing an early oil change (like 1200), I would use Pennzoil, because it is a good break in oil. It has a low ash content as well.

Re: Quick which Oil To USE????
It is a subject of much debate, but I personally put in synthetic oil right after break-in. Having to wait 10k seems a bit overkill in my mind, not to mention Mobil-1 themselves says that synthetic oil can be put in at any time in a new car engine (and as such many new car motors come with synthetic right from the factory). In any case I've changed to synthetic at ~1000 miles in my last 2 new cars, and my preference is Amsoil with Mobil-1 being second.

Re: Quick which Oil To USE????
Yeah, there is quite a bit of debate on this particular issue. I personally think that an engine DOES need to break in. I think 10k is a pretty long time, but I think 1K is too short. This engine does take longer to fully break in than many other engines, but I think 6k is a good point. I have spoken to MOBIL 1 techs (not saying that they are always right), and they have also said 6k. Do what makes you feel comfortable. Me, I think you should let the engine break in a little, because syn oils do decrease the rate of break in.

sorry bro i don't know the part number right now, I'm not at home where the part is... but here is grubb's website with it on it.

I have about 3000 miles on my car and i never made it in for an oil change at 1000 like i had wanted too. I am going to be putting 1000+ miles on the car this next week and want something that will work well and not let this little excursion hurt the car.
So should i switch to synthetic now or wait.... What is the difference between 5w30 and 10w30?
Could you all just tell me straight out exactly what i should use, because i really have no understanding of this aspect of the car ..... yet.... hehe.
Thanks for the help

Re: Quick which Oil To USE????
It all comes down to if you want to use the synthetic or not. There is so much information for wait vs. not wait, that you can easily rationalize away your ultimate timing choice. I threw in Mobil 1 at 5900 miles. I like it -- it just gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling everytime I take it up to redline. Little peace of mind going into a cold IL winter as well.
