Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
I'm thinking about buying a G35 next year and with the options I want, payments to it would be around 400-450 a month. My wife and my combine NET income is around 4000. Our mortgage is 1000 dollars. No other big expenses really. So would you go for the car if you were in this situation? I've been teetering between saving the extra money and driving my old car to saying "you only live once". Any suggestion or comment is welcome.

It's your budget. That's something you have to decide. You're going to get a slant towards "buy the G35" on this forum.. as most of us are owners and love the car.

Go with a healthy medium. Save a little longer than you originally wanted to so you can put more money down and thus lower your monthly payments. There's nothing wrong with the ol' "save and wait"... that's what I'm doing. =)
Re: Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
My payment is definitely worth it! Having said that it appears that your car payment will exceed 10% of your net which may be ok. Other economic factors such as children, future children, future large cash outlays (ie. my washer & dryer are15 years old) etc. can also have an affect on your decision. From your post it appears mortgage is your only other debt? Anyway, I agree with previous posts...maybe save a little longer for lower payments, but, in the long run only the two of you know what your budget can handle. I, unfortunately know too many people who couldn't figure it out until it was too late.

your in a dilema. Your ID is telling you that Cars are never a good investment. They will always depreciate. Financially speaking your better to save your money and drive that old car till it dies.

Your super ego is saying hey you got the extra cash. you know you want a new car so go for it.
Only you can make this decision. For me is was being able to convince the wifey

Personally, I would look at how much money you’d still save every month if you were making the extra $400-450 car payment. Is that enough for you two to live on and still save for emergencies? If so, then I say go for it, you’ll both love the car. However, if you’re going to feel strapped for cash, then it’s not worth the headache. Purchasing the G should enhance your lifestyle--it shouldn’t be a stressor.

Re: Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
Try to think like an accountant. That's what I did.
I set my target monthly payment, $300. I saved enough money, considering what my trade was going to be worth, and then did the deal. It took me 8 months to save up $15k in cash, knew I'd get about $10K on my trade (which I did), bought a G35c for $38.6k, total $42K including TT&L, $25K total down, and ended up with $290/mo payment. Voila.. Kick *** car in my garage.

$400 - 450 per month does that include your insurance as well? Of course it all depends on where you live, but you still can't forget about insurance. Good luck on your decision.

Re: Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
I make about the same as you do, but only pay $500/month rent(including utilities, cable, cable internet, & phone), don't have a live in gf, and probably pay less for insurance than you would. All in all, I think it may be a stretch for you to purchase a car that after tax and other fees will run $38-42K.
Re: Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
Hold off on the G. It's going to be around a long time. I saved up 18K to drop down as down payment. I got my car in Feb and my payments are $360 / month. The wait will be worth it.
Re: Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
How are you estimating a $400 payment? I'm assuming you would need to put down $15,000 - 20,000 cash on the car to get a payment that low. At $4000 net per month, are you saving everything extra toward a down payment? I'm not trying to turn you away from the G, it's an AWESOME car, thats just a lot of cash to be putting down on a new ride.
I put 11,500 down, after taxes, fees, title, etc..my payments are $600+, not to mention another $200+ for full coverage insurance. Granted, I live in LA, and insurance is cheaper in other areas, but if you were in my shoes, almost 1/4 of your total net income would be spent on the car.
just my .02$

Re: Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
my trade in would be like 10Gs and I would put in about 5Gs in cash. plus I would do a 60 month with real low interest cause I got good credit. The one thing I left out is, I don't really have to worry about savings right now cause we have a large chunk of stocks giving to us by our parents.
Re: Would my payments to a G35 be worth it?
ok, now I understand.
Be aware, I haven't heard of too many folks etting exceptional rates on the G-coupe. On the 03' sedan, they are offering 1.9% with good FICO scores. On the coupe, with a 710+ FICO, they offered me 5.9, which I was able to lower to 4.9 by adding lo-jack and an extended warranty. Keep in mind that the 2 added about $2200 to the price of the car in exchange for that 1 point.
It sounds like you have it all worked out...best of luck getting the car.
