G35 Coupe Appreciating????
G35 Coupe Appreciating????
I have an 04 coupe i bought in Nov 03. In Connecticut we have to pay property taxes on our vehicles. For those of you who are not familiar with that, its similar to house property tax yearly. It takes the value and multiplies it by the Cities' Mill rate.
In 2005 the car was assessed at 18430 with a mill rate of .023030 = 424.44 for the year.
In 2006 the car was assessed at 22190 and the mill rate actually went down to .022050 = 489.29 for the year.
Yes your seeing it correct... the I am paying more for the car as it gets older. So I called the city and said obviously this is not possible. They have your VIN # so they can check all your options etc. They said they use NADA for everyone's assessment and that my car went up in value. I tried to argue saying thats impossible since no vehicle goes up in value as it gets older. Cars are a depreciating asset. So of course they said you missed the deadline to appeal but according to NADA it went up. And they said they maid a mistake in 05 and assessed it wrong, but didnt say by how much.
Anyone else experience anything like this? Its stupid.

that sucks it's not bad enough you have to pay a sales tax when you buy it but you also have to pay an annual tax, glad we don't have that here. at this stage you should leave things alone before the sharks come out and back tax you for 2005.
Property Tax on a car? So, does that mean if you sale the car at a loss, you can now claim it on your tax return then?

No big surprise...typical political move:
They decrease the millage rate and make a lot of noise about it and how they're decreasing tax rates for the people and how they're looking out for the people. However, in the background they quietly change the formula used to calculate the value of the car. The net result is that they can claim they lowered tax rates while what they actually did is increase your taxes!
They did the same thing 2 years ago in Massachusetts with income tax. They put a question on the ballot asking the citizens if they want to decrease their income tax rate. In the small print they decreased the standard deduction which, in turn, increased everyones tax bill (because the smaller rate applied to a much larger portion of a person's income).
Be careful who you vote for!

I remember Florida used to have an "impact" fee for vehicles you have when moving into the state. I wonder if that is still the case.
