Why does my gas mileage SUCK?

Yeah.. just as the thread says...

I do almost all city driving... short trips... and I know that will kill gas mileage... but seriously, my navi says I'm geting 10-11 mpg (and this is averaged over time)...

that's ****ing horrible. im not redlining my car all over town, i floor it from time to time but not every moment i get.

the dealer replaced my clutch a couple months ago and it seems like it was worse after that... that wouldnt have anything to do with it, would it?

is this normal, or does anyone have an idea what might be wrong? maybe its just my driving, but it still seems ridiculously low.

if youve done the search then you would know to not trust your navi

fill her up and divide the number of miles you got by the number of gallons of gas you used

Do you ever get out of 1st gear? In all city driving I'm getting arond 17 MPG and 22 MPG overall.

My numbers are somewhat in line with chilibowls also.

Something that I didn't see mentioned is the octane level of gas you all are throwing into the gas tank. The lower level octane will result in lower gas mileage. So if any of you are throwin in 87 octane you are probably seeing somewhere around 5+ miles per gallon less than if you were throwing in higher octane gas. Yes your G will run on 87 octane.

Treating the traffic light like it was the tree at the race track also plays a big factor in poor gas mileage.

For accurate readings use your trip counter, you have two of them ( A and B ). For more accurate readings average out over two or three fill ups.

Getting a car moving from a full stop is when the engine is delivering the worst economy. Don't run around blasting your A/C 24/7, it really hurts gas mileage....if you have no choice, use the climate control and use the "ECONOMY" function. Engine heat also affects gas mileage. If you startup your car and drive 5 minutes to the first destination, the engine doesn't fully warmup. Then you drive another 5 minutes when the engine is cold and still doesn't get to fully warmup, etc. etc. If the engine doesn't run at its regular operating temperatures for 90% of each commute, it also hurts gas mileage.

Finally, what city are you in? Some cities seem to have you sitting at a light most of the time, and actually DRIVING for very little of the time. You only get the G35C's rated gas mileage at 30+mph.

also your cruisin speed. A good rpm to cruise around town is 1700 to 2000rpm. Don't cruise on 3000rpm. That would definitely eat up more gas.

I would say this to those who have low mpgs and the car is perfect. You need to fix your driving habits.

Need to shift properly, shift to the proper gear and cruise at the right rpm.

If you have Nav on your car it should be even easier to maintain a higher mpg. I was able to get 20mpg when I drive city because of the nav.

I watched the mpg meter that is a feature on the nav. Everytime your foot is on the throttle watch the mpg. You can easily tell at what RPM is the most optimum for your mpg.

even if you're cruisin at 2kRPM you can still be wasting too much gas because you're tryin to accelerate at a gear that's too low. Downshift to a higher gear, it will allow you to accelerate faster in a shorter amount time therefore wasting less gas. Rather than trying to accel from 2k RPM and takes longer to get to your desired speed, therefore wasting more gas.

I hope this helps.
