Was my grandmother ripped off?

Hey, I'm the teenager that posted earlier asking wether I should accept my dad's G35. Well, my grandmother got rid of the 1996 Escort, and bought a 2007 Civic. It cost us 22k out the door. I heard that cars cost a bit more in Hawaii, but that's 4k over MSRP. I don't know much about the pricing of cars, but I am pretty sure that she had been duped because of her age. What should the price really have been?

You should ask post this in a Honda forum instead. I'm sure they are more familiar with the pricing.

Also, check www.edmunds.com for their for pricing statistics.

Poor Granny..............

Well yea, I think you might be in the wrong place.
Why wasn't someone watching out for her to let her
buy a Honda in the first place?

what options did grandma get on the Civic? What model?

Also Honda's are great cars, usually cost a bit more than Nissans

The Civic was a standard 2007 LX, with no options. And how did you figure out that comment? Makes me feel like you're somehow my father because he said the same thing.

lol, no I ain't your father

but anyways...having owned a Civic, my bro owned a Civic, as did my dad, I can tell you they are bullitproof if you take good care of them, they don't cost too much to maintain and resale tend to be better than most other car companies...but yes they do cost a bit more than other cars out there.

Like I said, Hondas are great cars...I have a Prelude still and my wife had an Accord...every second car on the road is a honda...at least here in Vancouver

Yeah I figured that from the "Vancouver" location, and the fact that you have different cars in your sig. So, with your experience with Civics, or actually with cars in general, do you think that was overpriced? I heard that people should generally go for MSRP, but I do not know how living in Hawaii affects that, if at all.

i checked the Canadian Honda web site and built a civic 4 door LX, came up to approx $25,000 Canadian = just under $22,000 US

Keep in mind that car companies generally price their cars "higher" for the Canadian market than for the US market....I would have to say yes, your grandma did get fleeced by the dealer...

Hopefully some fellow US members here can help u out a bit more than I, or like someone mentioned, post on a Honda forum...

I also heard that living in Hawaii comes witha premium, like gas cost more, food etc...so I assume so does cars?

Sounds like she got tricked into the paying the Markup... Hawaii Dealers tend to try and charge you more because you can't really drive to another state to buy from another dealer.

IE my friend tried getting a new Vette and they wanted 10k over msrp and would not budge. He ended up buying from the mainland under MSRP and shipping it over.

That's a lot for a Civic. My mom payed 18 and change for a 4-banger 2004 Accord about 2 years ago with decent options... I can't believe they are asking over 22 now for a low-end version of a Civic.

Hopefully Hawaii's prices are the reason.. because I'd hate to see your grandmother getting ripped off by some greedy dealer just so he can line his pockets a bit.
