best of luck with that- I wouldn't take anything less than a whole engine replacement and not the 'short block' or cheap way out, you don't know whats been damaged...

I'm not a mechanic so this is just a theory based on what I've been reading about oil consumption issues on this forum and how their drivers drive. I'm still monitoring my car (520 miles) and crossing my fingers that it doesn't have the same problem.
i followed the break-in procedure on my car... and i have no/zero/zilch consumption problems thus far. i've also auto-x'd my car in the past, so it has seen it's moments of abuse.

I honestly don't think the way the car was broken in has anything to do with this issue. This is due to a bad design or a bad part. People who have broken it in hard are having this problem. People who broke it in easy have this problem. People in between are having this problem. If you are lucky, you got a good engine. If not, you are burning oil like a biatch and need a new VQ.

exactly - these engines left the factory this way and the only way to tell if you got a good one is to check your oil, no matter what year or tranny you have. The VQ likes to be driven hard and I think break in these days is more a matter of personal choice than anything, but a badly assembled motor wont get any better from babying it.
