Sticky Gas Pedal

Anybody notice that the gas pedal is a little sticky?

It only happens when I'm at a complete stop. If I slowly step on the gas it takes a little while, and then the power comes on all at once. Sort of embarassing, especially if you are trying to be a smoooooth driver {:-)

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

Haven't heard of any such issues on the G's. Could it be that you're not used to it yet?
The "sticking". Is it an actual sticking that you feel and have to push harder to release? Or is it some initial travel in the pedal that seems not to do anything?
I had a V-6 Contour a while ago that had a problem like that:
The throttle plate was binding in the air horn (at zero throttle) and had to be adjusted. .........Good luck, and compliments on your fine choice in cars.

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

I noticed that it happens in both the loaner sedan and my coupe. So I don't think its an issue of being more "sporty". Besides, isn't a smooth driver a faster driver?

Now that you mention it gsedanman, it's more of a "hesitation" than a stickyness. As I press on the pedal from a dead stop, the engine doesn't respond and the car doesn't move for a little while. When the pedal gets to a certain point, maybe about a quater-inch, the engine kicks in and away we go. It's almost like there is a built-in delay, and then it comes on all at once.

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

Sounds like a 'late 'tip-in' condition that maybe differs from your privious car which may have had an early tip-in condition.
On the late tip-in types, there's more initial gas pedal travel b4 big time accelleration. On early tip-ins there more accelleration on initial movement of the pedal.
I read this somewhere in one of my shop manuals.

Good luck with the Coupe. Tell us about it.

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

Gsedanman, it sounds like the learning by the computer that goes on with the Drive by Wire. He should try unplugging the battery for the 12 hours like you did, if not then he needs to program the full open to full close of the throttle.
Take a look in the service manual, you'll see what I mean. Later.

Merlin.

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

What he said..

Most drive-by-wire cars like the G35 coupe/sedan, 350Z, all late model VWs, etc have this slight delay after the gas pedal is depressed initially. It can be programmed out, but it has this delay by default. Makes rev matching a pain with the manual tranny..

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

Thanks for the input guys....

I tried ordering the Shop Manuals about 2-3 weeks ago to learn more on the car, but they only had the G35 Sedan's manual available. They weren't sure if it covered the G35C, and said to call back in about a month.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate it if anybody knows how to program this out, and if in fact it's worth it.

Good luck with the Coupe. Tell us about it.

Thanks..... I surprised my wife with the Coupe for XMAS. It replaced her '92 Lexus SC400 which she had for 11 years, and was still running strong with 134K on the ODO. The G35C was the first car in all those years that we both felt was up to replacing the SC. We had a little bit of sellers remorse, but the Coupe is everything we could have hoped for as a replacement. Here's a pic.

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

You're right Merlin, ( I remember reading that on the ESM now that you mention it). From what he's described so far I tend to believe it's not out of adjustment or even out of the ordinary. Perhaps driving another car would verify. Hard to tell from here.
As far as disconnecting the battery, to zero the learning algorithm: yes by all means. If you 'granny' the car too much (sorry granny) it's only gonna remember non aggressive driving, (and perhaps even the slow tip-in I mentioned b4!)
It's possible the resetting of the WOT and Fully closed throttle positions need attention, but I would reset the computer first- by disconnecting the batt. for 12 hrs., then perhaps go from there... Opinions?

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

I agree 4thgen, The slow response to throttle input seems to be 'the nature of the beast' on these DBW's. For that reason I'd try zeroing the learning algorithm first - (by disconnecting the batt. for 12 hrs.)- then, if necessary, look elsewhere, such as resetting the wide open and closed throttle settings- as Merlin said. According to my manual, it's fairly straightforward to do.

VettRn. Lovely ride man. And what a gift! I guess it had to be to replace a fine car like the SC. I'll vouch for your choice , as will many around here, hahaha. Enjoy..... the car and the good weather you're having.................................

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal

Just picked my g35 coupe up yesterday. Traded in a '93 Lexus sc300 wit 98,000 miles on her. I know how you feel about "sellers remorse"...it was hard to say good-bye. My wife and I also felt like this was the first car we'd seen that we would even think about replacing the sc300 with (although it was getting a little expensiveto maintain).

We also choose the Ivory. he's a 6MT with Graphite interior, premium pkg and aero.
