Re: 6MT coupe performance in snow/ice ?

You have to be careful with the aftermarket rims for the 6MT 'cos of the Brembos. Rims with the proper offset for the clearance are a bit rare. For the 5AT, I imagine the clearance won't be an issue so the choices must be a bit larger... However, the FRDs will fit in nicely.

If I were you I'd go with aftermarket 17" rims and snow rubbers rather than using your stock 18" rims and getting them mounted with 18" snows....

I tried it and got stuck in 1 inch of slush at a corner. It was humiliating. I've been driving m/t's from Acura's to Z's for 25 years... and I've never had a car permorm so poorly in so little snow. Needless to say I'm scrambling for snows right now! Good luck, and I'd suggest leaving the G home in anything more than flurries.

Drove my G in 6 - 8" of snow this morning for 30 miles, piece of cake with the winter grips.
The trick is to match the rolling circumference.
Here is the comparison between the stock Pilots and the LM-22 winter sizes:

Stock New
225/45/18 225/50/17
Diameter 26.0 Diameter 25.9
Circumference 81.6 Circumference 81.2
Radius 13.0 Radius 12.9
Revs/min 777 Revs/min 780

Stock New
245/45/18 235/50/17
Diameter 26.7 Diameter 26.3
Circumference 83.8 Circumference 82.5
Radius 13.3 Radius 13.1
Revs/min 756 Revs/min 768

Ghetto G35 in snow video with summer Pilot Sports

Based on my experience last winter, I have purchased LM-22's. You DO NOT want to be driving on the summer tires with snow/ice/slush on the road. Just asking for trouble.

Afro, your video is notorious on my computer....;-)
I was actually recalling your video while I was typing the message, and was wondering how come your car handles so good....
Now I know the answer....

I tried driving on stock tires last winter but both times ended up stuck in about 1 inch snow. I would suggest don't take the risk of driving the car on pilots. Buying the tires is cheeper than wrecking the G.

Don't try the snow with Pilot.....last time I can't even drive more than 20km/h with less than 1/2 inch of snow.....

But now I am a happy (and safe) g35 driver in winter with LM-22

LOL! Actually, i have the LM-22's now... in that video those were two week old Pilot Sports. Brand spankin new. Most of the video is edited to remove all the slipping and being stuck, which is why video is not that great.

BTW, I'm working on a new video. My car is fully broken in so I can tear it open in the snow. Plus I know how to completely disable VDC.

Well, I just meant there are some things worthy of using credit for when you are short on $$...and I would say snow tires to protect your baby are one of them.
That is unless said shortage hasn't dried up that credit! :P

Syntro,

Sorry for the late reply, but thanks a million for the info! I am going to seek out my winter tire package now.

Let me know when you're planning to post that video, and I'll make sure to free up some space on my piece of crap computer....
