1st time fishtailing

I dont know if this happens to anyone, it was on a dry road from a dead stop to merge to fast going traffic VDC off, I launch at 2500rpm and just punch it, right before the redline when I shift to 2nd it chirped and I felt my G fishtail a little bit, my wife was on the passenger seat and she was stuck on the seat LOL. I felt I hit 50mph in like 3.5 sec or so, that was weird..

Re: 1st time fishtailing

I did it for the first time while attempting a uturn. There was a small puddle that I ran through that slicked the tires just enough so that when I floored it, I almost got sideways. But I was able to correct and ove on without major incident.

I usually turn VDC on on wet roads, also do you guys feel like it will "jump" right after shifting from 1st? like a pushing motion VDC off of course..

Re: 1st time fishtailing

I remember reading reviews on the coupe months before thay even came out. Almost everyone said, that the coupe seemed to be a little "tail happy" under certain circumstances. Maybe just a friendly warning to slow down and take it easy through this Winter : )

Yes, def be gentle w/the gas under certain conditions. I'm sure most would notice this after washing their car and immediately going for a ride. You gas it, and the rear has no grip on the road at all. At least for me this has happened.

-edit- I'm sure this affects both 17's and 18's.

I'm in SoCal and the first week i got my car I already fish tailed. It's a different driving experience with RWD as opposed to FWD. It's realy easy to fish tail on corners without the VDC being on. And one thing to pay attention to, is the bumps in the road, with our stiff suspension on a corner, hit a little bump while turning at 50 mph and you'll definitely fishtail!

Re: 1st time fishtailing

After test driving a red/willow manual I knew I'd get in trouble from doing fishtails all the time,so I decided to get an auto only to realize it's almost the same.I like hitting left turns and practicing drifting cause the car feels more stable for me on those turns.Right turns seem to get too squirly.

I've had an accident because of fishtailing guys. That sucked soo bad. As a result I never turn off my VDC no matter how tempted I get...

Re: 1st time fishtailing

fishtail...that's nothing.....try drifting...

I drifted with my wife in the car and it was hilarious watching her describe what she did when I did it. Imagine when someone thinks your about to get into an accident and they panic, trying to brace themselves for impact. That's what she did, and then reenacted it. I wish I had a camera.

The car felt like it was floating, and when I got around the turn, it was lined up perfectly for the straight. talk about lucky.

As for fishtailing, try taking a 90 degree turn in second around 3000 RPMs and punch it (only alittle the first few times, to get a feel for it). That'll send the *** out there. And if you turn out just before turning in you'll really get it out there.

don't be stupid, make sure no one is around when you do it and extra wide roads give you a little more time to recover.
If you're not careful, you'll be making a call to you're insurance company. And coming up with some lame excuse for the cops.

Re: 1st time fishtailing

I take 90 degree turns in 2nd all the time at autocross events. Last Saturday I was in the first group of cars, and the track was still cold and dusty in the early morning. The back end really wanted to come around, and on one run I over-corrected and swung the back end the other way before straightening out, and on another run the back end came around so quickly, that with my foot off the gas and the steering wheel turned fully to lock, it didn't line back up... the car slid sideways to a stop, pointing 90 degrees off course but sliding in the right direction, and knocking aside 6 cones that were in the way of the tail. This car is usually pretty forgiving, but this road surface was slicker than I'm used to.

Don't try this on city streets, guys.

BTW, I blame it on the Bridgestone Turanza tires, not my driving skills.

On a side note, on my last run I decided to try out the autocrosser's slogan of "slow down and drive faster." I braked more for the turns, smoothed out the corners, and stopped wagging the car's tail. The run felt overall slower than my previous runs, but was by 2.2 seconds my fastest time. Drifting is the fastest way through a particular corner, but it's not the fastest way around the whole track.

Re: 1st time fishtailing

I've seen the same thing happen. I had the 330Ci before this and never had that problem at the same speeds and the exact same Michelin Pilot Sports...

At first, I thought maybe my tires had uneven wear, but nope. Checked those. Tire pressure was fine. I haven't used the tire shine in awhile, so it wasn't that.

It just seems to be with the G. Oh well, I guess we all adjust somehow
