Best way to lift my G for working on?
Best way to lift my G for working on?
I'd like to lift my coupe so that I can do some work on it that will require removing all four wheels at the same time. I'm new to working on cars so any advice would be appreciated. Basically what I'm looking for is a way to safely jack up the car and put it on stands. And by safe I mean for me to be working around it and for the car frame/body. Ideally I'd like to keep costs down too.
Thanks.

Get a floor jack and 2 sets of jack stands. Shouldn't even cost $100.

It's not that easy. You need a longbody floorjack to get under the coupe at all, and then you need one with a long reach (I measured almost 36") to the central jack points. The cheapest longbodies available are $350 to $400. I've used them on other low cars with great success.

An alternative is to use another jack (floor or other) to lift the car one point at a time, then put a jackstand under it at that point and continue around the car. This is not a very safe way to perform the task however.
Another way to lift just the front end is to use low-profile ramps at first, then slide an ordinary floor jack under the jack point and lift it the rest of the way.
Any way you slice it it's not easy to get the whole car in the air without a longbody jack (or a lift).

Hi,
I use two hudraulic scisors jacks from Wal-Mart. They are a one ton lifting capacity and will fit right under your G. I recommend raising the car equally from both sides by going back and forth and raising it a few inches each time. The jacks fit where the mechanical jack that comes with the car fits. They are very in-expensive. I forget but I think around $20.00 each.

central jackpoint:
rear: just aft of the differential
front: center of suspension crosspiece, between the two plastic diffusers
same for sedan
additionally a normal floor jack can be used as stated, but you have to ramp up the front wheels to get to it, probably at least 3-4 inches for the coupe

what do you do to prevent the lift points from getting damaged? These generic jacks do not have the same lift point area as the jack that comes with the car.

A $60 alligator jack with 2 1/2 ton capacity will work. You don't need to buy the $200 -$300 jacks for it. If a car is lowered to the ground and the jack won't fit underneath there is a simple solution. Put a 2 x 4 wood against both the front tire roll over the wood and make sure both tires rest on top of it. Viola! 2" clearance for your jack enough to get the jack under the car.

For the proper lift points, see this thread; it has pics from the service manual:

If you choose to do so, be especially careful when using multiple jacks to raise an automobile (suggested above). Raise each side slowly, a little at a time, and always use jackstands to back it up.
