Smile Plenum Spacer = new ECU..?

Hi all.

Since last year I have had an Injen catback exhaust, z-tube, groundwires, K&N dropin on my '04 5AT coupe.

Nothing special, I know.. But if I plan to add a plenum spacer to the mix, do I really need to consider investing in a Technosquare ECU upgrade or should I be able to get all of the benefit without further modification? Thanks

reflash is not necessary. though it is suggested especially for when youre done with all your modding.

Opinions will vary, but I didn't do new ECU with spacer. Picked up 6 hp on dyno. with the 5/16 on 2003 6MT.

not completely necessary. you may consider to reset your stock ecu. but to get all the benefit, which may not be that much power, you can get the technosquare reflash. i don't think it would be worth the cost/benefit.

I think the exhaust is a bigger kicker for the reflash than the plenum mod.
Exhaust can you lean you out some.

not to really bust your ***** but even with installing a spacer, you haven't really done anything that you really could tune for. Wait until you have serious mods done to your car for that. seriously though you have a different intake tube (adds nothing but looks) a different air filter (adds nothing) groundwires (adds nothing except smooths everything out) and a low level exhaust. Do more, then tune.

not as much as the plenum spacer. You are adding more air in the chamber without adding any extra fuel.

unless he plans on modding it more...

most people here have exhaust, intake, some sort of plenum mod, and no flash.

wait til youre done with modding to reflash. you should be happy after adding the spacer with no reflash.

yea friend of mine with his altima se-r did exhuast, cai, pulleys, and headers...after all of that he did a ts reflash. It's not even normal what it did to his car. I beat him off the line cause of the launch but after that his car pulls on me like theres no tomorow. Any kind of rolling start and im done...especially 3rd gear.

if you're only planning on doing the standard "bolt-on/breather" modifications (intake, spacer, headers, cats, exhaust) you dont need a reflash or new ECU, all you really need is an A/F ratio controller so you arent running lean. If you want a reflash or new ecu, then by all means, go right ahead, but it's not required.

On spacer comparisons performed by Sport Z Mag, A/F ratios differences were not that significant IMO:

For example, the difference (5/16" MD) in A/F ratio between stock and spacer:

A/F range stock: 14.31-12.93
A/F range spacer: 14.23-12.74

Header and exhaust mods tend to lean out at the high end making ECU changes more important.
