I'm getting into the Japanese-Import game rather late, as I spent most of my young life working at European dealerships as a technician. I have spent time with BMW and thier modified Alpina division, at Mercedes and their AMG machines, and yes, even Ferrari. (Not much to do with Ferraris as I was just an apprentice back then and all I basically did to them was alignments... just being honest.) But I have plenty of driving time with AMG's and I can tell you that my Auto G Coupe will give me the same rush as driving, for example, a CL55K. I'm by no means comparing the two vehicles side by side (because they are SO different in many respects) but the pure rush of driving them is nearly equal. (The CL will give you more of a rush because it's so big that you **** your pants trying to figure out how to take a turn with this "boat" when at full throttle. It's scary stuff... and the walnut steering wheel gives you no comfort... it's almost staring back at you saying "Who the **** are you?!"

I remember te first time I drove a G I thought "Smooth as silk".
I once drove a 96 TT Supra and from what I gather/remember, the G coupe handles much better than the Supra. Of course I'm comparing technologies that are 8 years apart, but that's what I gathered. As for acceleration, I don't know how someone can quote the G has "nowhere near" the power of a Supra, c'mon, that's just ridiculous.

I love the Supra, and yes, If they were still available, I would look into one. But at some point in my life, I got tired of replacing bearings on Garrett turbochargers... too high mainenance.

Mike anytime you want to come see how your G stacks up to the perfromance of my 98 supra tt...just let me know....I'll even break you off for free....I enjoy watching other cars disappear in my rear view mirror.

Handling, I disagree, I've driven both, and owned at 300ZXTT as well, and the G handles better than either of them. No way to prove it, though, so I will just agree to think you are wrong.

I'm not so sure about the 290 rwhp stock. They are 320 at the crank stock, and Supras are notorious for dyno tests where they use bags of ice to cool down the intercooler and other neat little tricks to improve the dyno. I'd go with about 250-260 stock, and easily modified to around 375-400.

But hey, either way, the G is still a great car.

Dave
Supras are underrated from the factory. 290rwhp is the common number and sometimes 300rwhp could be attained from absolutely stock engines. I've seen as high as 310rwhp from stock Supra.

I agree that G is a great car... hell, that's why we all drive one! Best combination of perfomance and luxury under $40k

Personally, I see the G35 Coupe in much the same light as the Lexus SC300/SC400 and Acura CL Type S, not the heavy hitters of the Japanese GT realm.

That a comparison with the MKIV TT is even brought up borders on comedy. The G is a great car and has been a great success for Nissan. But until the GTR model appears, it really cant compare well with the GT cars of the 90s.

I'll tell you what, that car is nuts. Love it, pure and simple. Merciless ride, though. It kills Saleen mustangs around here for sh*ts & giggles.
In actuality, RX-7's are pretty good cars, IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM. One of the biggest problems is people used to slap mufflers and intakes on the things, without adjusting the A/F ratio. The ECU in the RX-7 cannot re-adjust automatically, it must be adjusted with a fuel controller of some type. otherwise, it leans out and BOOM.
Now that I've said that, I'll put my foot in my mouth. We have had to replace the engine, tranny, and both turbos on it. It was due to the fact that a previous mechanic put in the wrong thermostat type, and then "test drove" the car until it shut itself down. Blew the seals.
The tranny had to be replaced because another dipsh*t shop did some maintenance on it, and put it back together wrong. To it's credit, tho, the tranny lasted another two years before it gave up the ghost.
The biggest reason I don't care for the thing is finding someone to work on it. One of our local Mazda dealers has outrigt refused to touch it, and says if we bring it in, they'll charge us double labor rate!
Let's here it for pistons instead of rotors!

Having been a 10 year FD owner, thats The 3rd Gen RX-7's body designation, I am curious how your GF has a 92, since they were introduced as 93 MY cars. Maybe you are going by the build date? Also is your girls FD an auto or 5 speed? The Autos were never known to be very reliable, especially with increased power levels. I had one of the few CYM R-1 FD's that I drove for 10 years until I sold the FD for my G.
At any rate, that is completely true, there is what is considered a 2 mod rule on and FD RX-7. Intake and downpipe, or down pipe and exhaust, or any combo like above. Any more than that and you seriously risk detonating the engine and the resultant failure of the Apex seals. Bear in mind that 2 mods can easily add 50RWHP, on this car making it quite the beast and improving hte power curve, especially if your mods happen to be downpipe and intake as that allows the turbos to spool far earlier. The biggest ally to this car's performance is it's amazingly light weight. They were 2750 ish Lbs in the R-1 guise from the factory and a downpipe, midpipe and cat back could easily shed 75 Lbs from it. Rip out some of the crap underhood and the car easily goes into the low 2600's. 325-350 RWHP is not a horribly difficult task with these cars even with the factory Twins. There was a person on one of the RX bullitin boards pushing 400 RWHP on the twins, although this power level is very destructive to the turbos.
Making the RX more like the G and adding Navi and other bells and whistles would turn it into one of the other current cars. Anyone who has driven a well set up FD would understand in a second. These cars are truly as close to driving a go-cart as one can get Lotus Elise excluded, as Lotus was even more fanatacial about weight then Mazda. What other car does .99 lateral G on 225/16 tires all around and stops in league with the G?

The G35 is an excellent sports coupe, but it can not compare to a sports car.

I will keep my '93 RX-7 in my garage, thank you. No other car gives you more "smiles per gallon": it is the combination of extreme light weight, terrific handling and decent power in a small but ergonomic package. I have kept improving on it over the years: GT35R single turbo at 15psi = 425 hp at the wheels. It is fun at the track!
