Sandbags for driving in the wet
Sandbags for driving in the wet
I have a G35 coupe driver telling me he keeps sandbags in his trunk all the time for snow in the winter and because it rains a lot in the summer.
Anyone else using sandbags for wet weather traction? I've frankly never heard of this before.

I happen to be 39. But I think the G35 owner in question is much younger. Just trying to keep an open mind, figure that maybe, just maybe, he knows something I don't. Especially since I don't own a G35 coupe, and he does.
^I thought it was u that was thinking about doing that, i guess i didn't read the post carefuly.
But again im just speachless what would people do not to correct their driving style.

i drove around for several hundred miles all over ohio (lots of scattered rain) on bald tires. never skipped a beat, albeit, i never got on it very hard around corners. driving carefully always beats a bag of sand or a heavy, rotting corpse in your trunk. it also smells less.

A better solution is to find couple of midgets and lock them in your trunk!
Putting sand bags in the trunk was what drivers of RWD cars routinely did back in the 50s and 60s during the snow season. All that's required today is a good set of radial snow tires. They are ten times more effective than extra weight in the trunk.

To the OP, ask your friend if he also uses studded tires?
I think the reason for putting extra weight in the trunk is to get some weight onto the rear axle, BUT nowadays, good cars like G35 and BMWs have a pretty good weight ratio from front to back (52/48) which gives almost half of the weight of the car to the back, and even more when accelerating. So you can tell your friend, that this was needed for the old cars that had all the weight in the front from the engine and the rear wheels would easily loose traction since there was not much keeping them down, and that sand bags just slightly help his G35 since half of the car's weight is already back there, so most of the time he's just haulin' extra weight around.
