Engine about to die at startup

What is the deal? I started my car this morning and it just did not sound right. It almost died. The rpm's dropped very low a couple of times before going to the normal level rpm's at idle. Is this a sign of a serious problem. I drive an '04 auto w/ 67, xxx miles.

Try cleaning the thottle body, MAF Sensor, and IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) as well. I've had this happen on some others cars and this fixed the problem for me.

could also be a leak anywhere in the intake path. Most common is a loose air filter. Also, could be Fuel pressure regulator or even a throttle position sensor. Ofcourse that is American car terminology, so without a code scanner it is hard to determine.

What is the Idle Control Valve and where is it? (Is is the butterfly valve you're reffering to?)

Scorcher

If I'm not mistaken it is between the MAF and the throttle body. I'll see if I can take a pic of it on my sedan later.

Basically it is an electrically-operated valve which allows air to bypass the throttle plate in a fuel injected engine to regulate engine idle speed.

honestly, i don't think it's the MAF. I could be wrong though. i say take it to the stealership. they'd know exactly what's wrong in a few minutes.

True... If under warranty, take it in. If not, you might as well try a few of these first.

unless he got the extended warranty, this probably wont be covered.

or could this be covered under the powertrain warranty? i doubt it, but it's a possibility.

try as suggested above, and take out your intake tubing, clean out the MAF, and check to see if there are any parts that have a lot of crap built up. you're at the mileage where you should do this anyway. unless you've already done it, but it doesnt sound like you have.

if all else fails, take it to a mechanic that specializes in nissan. if that doesnt work, bend over and bite the pillow with the dealer.

good luck.

Are you still having this problem now or was it just a one time thing?
