Learned Something New About the Vents

I have an '03 coupe and just learned something new about the air vents in the dash.

Since we have been experiencing record cold weather here in the LA area, I have been using my heater daily. I have noticed that even when the HVAC mode is set to the floor vent position for heat, a little cold air still comes thru the extreme left and right dash vents. In the past I had been told by the dealer this is normal. What I have now discovered is that if you rotate the little wheel at the top to the vent to the right (clockwise) until it clicks, you will reveive warm heated air thru that dash vent. If you rotate it back fully to the left, cool air. This is how vents on BMW's work, but I never knew my G functioned this way.

Has anyone else noticed this? I don't recall it in the owners manual.

I thought that wheel at the top of the vents closed them... you can see a little flap that turns with the wheel if you look directly into it.

i think those vents like others said before that it was only used to close the air off, not hot or cold. Just my .02

Guess I'll try this. Like the other poster said, I thought it closed the vents and opens it. What I discovered is when you put the heater on (yes, it is darn cold in the mornings here in Southern Cal ) the second setting or third and have the air directed at the feet and body, sometimes it is too strong and my body is getting too hot while my feet are fine. So, what I do is turn the dial so it is almost closed (turn the dial towards the box with an X through it), so less air will be directed towards my body. What I also discovered is if you turn on the foot vent and then turn off the HVAC, air will blow towards the foot a lilttle bit. However, if you turn the HVAC off while it is directed towards the body, almost no air will be blowing at the feet. It is as if the last setting is still there when you turn it off (i.e. the foot vent is still open, even if you turn off the HVAC).

HAHA that is great the damn 'wheel even has the signs as to what it is for ~ or x

The x would be stating you are closing the vents. The air you feel could but residualair seeping out.

Since we are all soo smart here i have noticed even when i have the air on my feet i feel air coming out of the dash vents too. .ANyone else notice that? Freakin crazy
