the G has its share of probs, like any other car, but nothing to deter someone from buying one
i dont know much about the Z4 but I have previously owned 3 bimmers & quite a few friends of mine own or have owned bimmers & I will say Bimmers tend to have more problems than the avg. *** car over 50k miles
I say G not because i own one but because I think the Z4 is kind of girlie looking & I honestly dont think it looks good (no offense to the ppl who have owned one just mho)
as far as looks I'd pick SLK320 or even a S2000 over a Z4 (& I dont really like SLK or S2000 that much)
get a G35C, 350Z or if
want a fast, small, flashy & athletic, try a 05 Lotus Elise (some think its ugly) but
has lotus-tuned toyota corolla engine, maintenance might not be bad
4cyl ...cheap gas : )
& faster than every car listed above
not bad if u into small cars
shop around, u can find a used one under $33k ....or just get a G

I loved the car...still one of my favorite cars. Quick and go-kart like handling.
I love my coupe...but two different type of cars kind of. I wish I had both.
BEWARE, the freakin Z4 is incredibly impractical.

What makes the Z4 impractical? Also, is the G almost as reliable maintenance-wise?

well if you dont mind not having back seats and a roadster is still practical for you, like you dont have to use the car for picking your kids up along w/ groceries etc i say get the z4 M. the z4 itself is ok but if your going to leave the G for a z4 or a z4M i say get the M. i actually wanted one b4 i got my G. i like having my backseat and the M was a little too much $$ for me at the time...it still is but drive them both back to back and see what you like

Reread the initial post. He's looking at an '03 Z4. Maintenance is free for 4yrs/50K whichever comes first. So the G will definately cost less to maintain.
The biggest advantage of the Z is that most people don't like its styling. Hence, resale values aren't very good, which of course is great for those who like the car. In my area, it's really tough for Dealers to sell the Z4, especially the M version. There's a Z4 M roadster for sale at Towson BMW. Believe it or not but they first asked $57K for the car back in March 2006. The car has been reduced in price over the months, until it was cut down to $49.9K about four months ago. Still no takers. I bet if someone offered them $48K for the car, they wouldn't say no. BTW Towson BMW has a whole lot full of Z4s languishing on the lot. No question that they would be willing to deal.

But, I disagree about comfort....
I'm 6' & I have far more room in my Z4M than I did in my G. (head & leg)
I can easily wear a helmet & still clear the roof.
& the M seats are in a different league entirely.
-I don't know if the power M seats have more adjustment or not though....
