Oh, weren't we trying to answer this question from the OP?

My answer (as well as wilksoner's): yes.

Not really. You'll still have oil pressure even with 2 quarts. It's the thermal capacity of that oil and the volume used at higher RPM that will still kill your motor if you run low.

Some cars have built in oil level lights. Now that's a good idea. Works like the TPS sensors in our tires. Oil gets to the bottom of the good range and a light on the dash comes on.

well i dont post much here but here is my story. i had a fully built Sti got rid of it for the G35 06 coupe(kinda regretting it). after about 6 months i heard some weard noises coming from the engine. the dealer said that the oil was low how much i asked and he said all of it. i got my oil changed 3 weeks before that. this went on for 2 more months. so i wanted to know what was going on. in some of the rev-up motores the vacume line that is engaged by the exhaust valve can make it consume mass amounts of oil. i was lossing 2 and a half every 2 weeks. i had to fight with the company then went to the inf.corp. and finally got a new motor. you should be checking the oil every day, and yes the dip reads 1/4 form full the dealer should of told you that.

I believe it responds to low oil pressure, not level. You will still have pressure when your oil is very low, just not enough oil to protect the engine at operating RPMs.

the noise that was coming was almost like a knocking, but not like DET. i know what that sounds like. if you are concerned then take it in but dont let them beat around the bush with valid and important details find out exactly what it is. good luck
